Labor Day Sept.1, this year

When I worked for the Pennsylvania State Police, Labor Day was the second largest day for DUI arrests. I worked a 12-hour shift and I remember getting over 200 DUI’s as part of a 4-hour sting we had sent up on a part of the freeway that was an express area off of an Interstate to the hospital. There would be drivers that couldn’t even exit their vehicle. Some would start to get out and end up falling to the ground. I didn’t even bother giving them a sobriety check. We would take them up to the hospital for a blood draw.

The hospital could run the sample for BAC and it would come back in 3-5 hours. We would sit them in a hallway with a lounger so they could sleep while the blood was being tested. Here in PA, it’s expensive if the BAC was checked at.08 and above. The higher the number, the higher the fine, plus costs, plus if the driver wanted a lawyer, plus court costs if they lost their case. Repeated DUI’s would go to jail and await being arraigned. Depending on their BAC number, they could find themselves going to jail. Loss of license was always possible.

It isn't that way here in the St. Louis area, it's a day, it's all about traffic and where it intends to go. Its insanity on the cement out there.
Have to agree on that with you. I gave up on going into the city on holidays long time ago here. Since moving back
I have noticed how much crazier the drivers are, I think it's all the transplants that have moved here from other places.
(Did I just say that outloud?)

My son has told me some stories of when he was on patrol over holidays (and other stories) I salute our Law Enforcement, you hear the tales but when one of those Officers is your son, you listen with a deeper hearing. Thank You Sir!

Although the state police sets up a sting, we must notify the public when (day and hours of operation) and where the sting will be located. We would generally put the information in the local newspaper. And still, so many people would ignore it. We were busy on holidays with DUI drivers. It was called “transparency.”

There were times throughout the day during a holiday when a few Troopers would ride around in a ghost or unmarked vehicle and still made several arrests for DUI.

I hope your son stays safe. There are a lot of mean drunks on the road and some carry a weapon.
