rent one.. and do it on cooler days... :)
Like so many other problems good suggestions were given. Counter reasons for not solving whatever the problems appear.

Looking at early morning temps for the next 10 days in Stillwater N Y. shows mid 60 degree climbing slowly into the mid 80's. Cutting grass doesn't have to be done all in one day.

A self propelled lawn mower doesn't take much storage space. A little mowing every day could be great exercise. I am100% certain my 80 year old wife could easily do that small yard.

@holly Great photos of the goats.

He came yesterday and mowed. Of course I had to ask about his delay. He said there was a death in his family and he had to travel to help out.

Understandable, then. It took him much longer to mow than usual because he had to stop twice and empty his grass catcher since the lawn was so overgrown.

Part of "home ownership" in "single family home" neighborhoods is the responsibility to keep the lawn mowed. If a person is unable to do so, it is probably time for them to consider moving to an apartment complex, where management is tasked with maintaining the property.

I some neighborhoods, a resident can be fined by not keeping up their property. Fortunately, I don't live in a HOA governed area. On my meal delivery route, I see many homes where the lawns look worse than mine.

I just heard from the latest guy that's doing my lawn mowing. He said he is not longer accepting checks and if I still wanted his services, to let him know. He took mine the last time and it cleared. I don't know what his problem is suddenly with checks. I said I'd pay cash. I haven't heard back.

Maybe the bank is the problem, or wherever he's cashing them. Banks usually hold payment on personal checks for a week or more, and check-cashing services take a percentage.

You "just heard from him"....give it a few days or so. I'm sure cash will be acceptable.

What type of payment does he want Deb?

I just heard back. He will take cash, but he can't come until around 7 pm. It's almost dark by then.

I don't know why I have such problems with lawn guys. I've been through like 6 or 7 since I bought my new house.
One kept raising his price each time he came until it got to be around $70, which I thought was too much.
One was irresponsible and let his girlfriend do the job and she mowed over some plants I wanted to save.
One just stopped coming with no explanation.
Others I contacted either did not return my messages or didn't show up when promised.
Some wanted a seasonal contract paid in advance. Yeah... pay them and it will be some excuse why he can't come.

I've been every route looking for lawn service.
Do it yourself. Pushing a lightweight mower is not difficult, and it would give you something to do.

@debodun - My mower is an old Black & Decker 175 corded.
I had previously used a battery powered mower but it was heavy to push and the battery kept dying.
The corded mower has lasted for years and it's very light to the touch. I can push it along with one hand.
Gas mowers stink and are way too much trouble. I would get a corded electric and a couple of long extension cords.

Is this a lawn business or just a local person trying to make a buck? If it's just a local guy maybe he's not declaring the money as income to avoid paying taxes so doesn't want checks because that creates a paper trail. Or maybe he's received too many bad checks and doesn't want to chance it. Then there's the hassle of taking checks to get cashed.

Since you don't use a credit card or cash apps you should always keep a few hundred dollars cash on hand.

I was considering that earlier this year, but there are so many choices these days. Do I get gas or electric? If electric, corded or cordless? I also want a self-propelled mulching mower, but many mowers don't have these features.
Get an electric "Non Corded" mower. Trying to drag a cord around would be a major PITA. It sounds like you are paying more, in one year, than a mower would cost. Here's an excellent electric mower that has all the features you would need. Plus, you would be wise to buy a 2nd battery so you don't have to run out of power halfway through your mowing.

It's a family that runs a produce farm. They rotate around to the local farmer's markets. Mowing is a side hustle for them. When I first moved in, I asked if they did mowing and the answer then was "No." They just started to do it this year. He brought over his business card one day.
