Lesser Known Facts About Sherlock Holmes

Just wanted to mention the new Sherlock Holmes series (newer) with Benedict Cumberbatch. If you have seen the first season, which they are working on a second last I heard, this is way good! Best I've seen lately, although I will always love the old actors from way back:)

I'll watch your video now SB, thank you much!! Denise

Interesting stuff SB:) I do like the twists they add though. Sherloch Holmes wasn't a real person, just a character in Sir Arthur's book right? Not sure at this moment, lol;)

SeaBreeze I've always loved Sherlock Holmes. I used to be an avid reader. In my 20's I was hooked on mystery novels. I read the whole series Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about Sherlock Holmes. I was always disappointed in Hollywood's portrayal of the character. Screenwriters often take too many liberties when the original material they get their ideas from is a novel. By the time they are done a project, nothing about the original story remains, except for the title. I have read countless novels that were then put on the big screen. I can only think of one which brought a novel to life... exactly as it was written. That was James Clavell's 1962 novel King Rat. In 1965 they released the film starring George Segal & James Fox. All in all, an excellent job of adaptation. It stays with the story line and portrayal of characters until the very last scene. That, I found forgivable.

never was a big fan. but i did like this one and added it to my collection

Interesting viewpoints from that article's author - can't say I agree with them all, though. I also found it a bit painful reading through their grammar.

NWLady, there are theories that the Holmes character was based upon a real person, most probably a Dr. Joseph Bell, whom Doyle had studied with at Edinburgh University.

Anyone have a clue how far Holmes got in school?

There was never a definitive answer in the original books, only tantalizing clues. We know he attended at least 2 years of university, but not which one(s) nor if he had ever continued his formal education beyond that point.

Not that he needed it, of course - he was largely self-taught in all the subject areas that were important to his work.

Thanks Phil, interesting;)
