Local cafe trying to cash in...

It’s expensive here too.

Two hotdogs, French fries, and a beverage $14.95 plus 8% sales tax.

I’m ok but it makes me wonder how parents and grandparents manage when they want to take the kids out for a treat or when a neighborhood dad wants to treat the little league team after a game.
This is a toasted sandwich with no sides.

My advice is to eat at home as much as you can, unless you are traveling or have a reason to eat out (such as in between doctors appointments). For me, there is no reason to intentionally eat out and have hotdogs and french fries. Those are junk food. I would rather bring a protein bar with me than eating hotdogs and fries in a hospital cafeteria.

I wonder the same thing when I see young parents out with their children and I know the restaurant prices are high. I paid almost $18 for a wrap and soda at Just Salad; tax included.

I think most of us are still living in the memory of the old price from 20, 30 or even 40 years ago. But, time has changed, most people are making more money than 20 years ago, and the stock market has reached all time high repeatedly in the past year. People do have money in their pockets. This cafe priced the basic ham and cheese sandwich at $14 because there are people willing to pay for it.

It’s not just the cost of the ham, cheese and bread. The owner pays for the building, the insurance, the utilities, the furniture, the staff, etc, etc. If someone doesn’t like the prices, they can pack their own lunch. If all places are pricing meals at about the same level, that’s likely what it’s costing them. It’s a tough business.

Didn't there used to be a way of comparing food prices internationally by looking at the cost of a Macca's Big Mac?

I haven't had a Big Mac for years but I am told by someone who should know that the current price is AUD$6.60 or US$4.41 (that is just the burger itself not a meal)

It's not easy these days. Long gone are the days when they were satisfied with a Happy Meal for $5. Of course, also long gone is the $5 Happy Meal.....

I used to go to the cafetaria for fries and snacks, but it has gotten so expensive. It costs them way more because of insane gas prices because of Russia. My ex said he bought fries, a can of soda and 2 or 3 snacks for 1 person and it was 26 euro. The Mc Donalds is way cheaper and better. You can eat for 50 euro with 4. I don't go there anymore though. A bag of fries in the airfryer is 1,79 and nuggets in the airfryer is 5 euro for 20 at the supermarket.

Eye-watering prices for fast food and restaurant meals have made dining out into a much rarer experience for us. It's not the money per se (we can afford it), it's the unpleasant aftertaste of feeling ripped off.

I don't mind paying a premium for specialty foods I don't make at home, but draw the line at junk food or meals I can pull together in a few minutes from ingredients in my kitchen.

I would rather bring a protein bar with me than eating hotdogs and fries in a hospital cafeteria.
Same, same. Granola bars and hard candy are stashed in all our vehicles, and we bring water bottles with us when we'll be out for over an hour.

I always have what if takes to make sandwiches at home, or open a can of chili and have it with crackers and it's ready in less time than I can get in my car and use the drive-thru only a mile away, and I always have cookies and ice cream at home.
