Macular Degeneration

I've been diagnosed with Macular Degeneration, for those who don't what it is? A decease of the eyes where you will eventually go blind, Not completely blind, you'll see on the sides of your eyes. There is No cure for it, it is a slow progressive decease. Is anybody out there dealing with this? I'm afraid to tell anybody about it because they would feel scared to ride in my car and don't want to be a burden to anyone. Honestly though my eyesight is not Perfect it Never has been. I had a physical about 6 months ago, and only need glasses for reading and when I drive. Thanks for reading

I have the beginnings of macular degeneration, just a tiny blind spot in the center of vision in both eyes. It's just enough to temporarily block out a bird sitting on a telephone wire. I saw a retinal specialist who did some tests and I have the dry type which progresses slowly. There is no treatment. The wet type progresses faster but there is treatment to slow it. I take AREDS vitamins as advised by my ophthalmologist. Tests have shown that they slow progression.

Mine has no practical effect yet. The spots are tiny and since my eyes are always moving I'm not usually even aware of it. I haven't noticed any change in the last couple of years. So, don't panic. And, there's no reason you should have to tell anyone.

Thank you for sharing, I was diagnosed a couple of years ago. I haven't noticed any difference. I passed a physical and even renewed my license which I had to take an eye test. I don't know if I have dry or wet MD. The eye doctor never told me to see a specialist? My medicare will take effect in 3 week's. Sometimes I'm scared to close my eyes? I've been taking eye vitamins. AERD that you mentioned, where do you get them from? I'd that the Brand name? Thanks

I am really sorry to read this Patnono, I have friends
in the same position as you and I feel helpless when
I meet up with them, they don't want any sympathy
or very little help which doesn't help my nature.

I wish you luck and pray that the progression is very,
very slow.

Mike.

Thank you for your support, I'm going to see a specialist. I need to see if this will affect my Diabetes? I haven't told my kids everything, especially my oldest daughter who what I've been told is already assuming that her future is dealing with Me and dreading it? I've never asked anything from my kids. I would probably do what I hear that Alot of seniors are doing stockpiling drugs and taking their lives instead of burdening their family? Seems that the Now generation doesn't want to deal with their parents, I don't want that either. I had told her and her husband to put me in a home. Both of them are anti family. I didn't raise her that way 😖

My father and my husband has this and he only has one eye to begin with. Both my father and my husband haven’t had theirs get any worse. People with this disease are usually told to take special vitamins and goji berries to help and most people’s condition doesn’t get worse with time. I say this to you to try and take some of your stress away. Hopefully your specialist will say the same thing to you. Vitalux is the brand name of supplements my husband was told to take.220CA51B-1F91-4A97-8244-CE76C4BE36D3.jpeg

You are most welcome.
Most doctors are focussed on treating symptoms of illness because that is what they are trained to do.Doctors aren’t specialists on wellness so were never trained on how to make the human body healthy. That’s not their job. They are trained basically to sell prescription drugs and that’s what they do. If you have x symptom, they have y prescription.

Many people who want to know about keeping healthy either go to a naturopath doctor or do their own research and find their own solutions which is what you did when you found these vitamins made specifically to treat diseases of the eyes or increase eye health. Good job. See you can do it. 😁

Didn’t you see an optometrist to get your eyes tested?

We consider them specialists here and that’s who suggested the vitamins for both my father and my husband.

Who tested your eyes?

Yes, but you'd think even though their Not Specialist? They would guide you and give suggestions?

Well maybe that’s why, because they aren’t specialist. Maybe this person didn’t know the latest information on treating this. I was actually surprised that both my husband’s optometrist and my fathers optometrist suggested vitamins as treatment. It’s rare that doctors prescribe vitamins. It’s not what they are trained to do. It’s not a criticism to conventional doctors, it’s just not normally what they do so try not to feel too disappointed.

Welcome, and I am sorry you are dealing with everything that you wrote about, here.
I am glad you asked for some advice from nice people here, who do understand.

My old Dad had MD in his later years, and it really hampered his freedom....he had to give up driving, etc. Several years ago, I asked my eye doctor about it, and he recommended a daily Lutein pill(6mg), and a daily Fish Oil capsule. At the time, I was noticing some "floaters", which the doctor said is an early sign. After a year or two of this routine, I stopped noticing these floaters, and haven't had them in years. I just had my annual and very thorough eye exam a couple of weeks ago, and my eyes actually seem to have improved slightly....a weaker prescription this time.
If you read the labels on most eye medicine, Lutein is a primary ingredient, in most brands. I just keep a couple bottles of Lutein pills and fish oil on hand....I buy them from Swansons Vitamins, online, and it seems that a few pennies a day is working good for me.

My Husband was diagnosed with macular -degeneration almost a year ago. He saw a specialist and has had 3 injections in his eye. It is supposed to remove blood or fluid behind his eye which is supposed to help with the condition.
