Miserable Failure!!!!!!!!

I'm really laughing as I post this. (I guess you had to be there)
46 years ago, I decided that competitive shooting would be fun. I went to the range with my first gun. After the first 6 shots, I looked at the target & it didn't have any holes in it. I had a range employee look at my gun & I said, "This gun is defective; it's not making any holes in the paper; maybe you can tell me what's wrong with it." I noticed he was trying very hard not to laugh. He said, "Let me try it out." He then put 6 holes in the target - all 6 in the same hole. Practice? What's that? Everyone on TV never misses. A few weeks later, I was doing well enough to compete.

All six in same hole? Curiosity makes me ask. How could you tell?

Learning to read. I just couldn't do it. They kept telling me to "try harder", but it just got worse and worse. The letters made no sense.

"Dyslexia" wasn't understood back then; you just weren't "trying hard enough".

In the third grade, something snapped in my brain; I will remember to my dying day the exact moment that everything fell into place and I COULD READ and I took to it like a duck to water.

I'm another one who never could get the hang of sewing, though I have a sister who's tremendously talented in that area. Different DNA.

Also failed my driver's test the first time out, but was much more comfortable 3 months later when I retook it and passed.

Never could get the hang of ice skating without my ankles bending inwards. Youtube and the internet have lots of info about how to solve that, but in those days we were pretty much on our own.

When we were kids it was a given that there would be a learning curve for most skills, so I don't consider early outings to be miserable failures, just part of the process of developing muscle memory. During epic fail moments, nearby adults and other kids would say, "Don't worry about it - you'll get it after a while." And most of us did exactly that.

taking my 1st driver's test
I took it 2 more times&failed.I realized I just didn't feel comfortable being behind the wheel
I've survived all these yrs without having a car,all the money I've saved
OMG It's hard to imagine a lifetime without a car but you're right on one point - - -you've probably saved a small fortune without having to buy, operate, maintain, and insure any vehicles. 😀

In the US, there isn't a hard set age for marriage. With parental consent, and some governmental consent, the age qualification can be waived. While it's theoretically any age, usually 12 is the lowest granted. I'm no lawyer, but I don't think this applies to so called "common law' marriages.???

As far as failure. Good grief, it would take a week just to list them all. But I did take up playing the guitar. I envisioned a new singing sensation: Peter, Paul, Mary & Fuzzybuddy. I practiced and practiced. I audition for my best friend. After I sang my heart with a great P,P&M ballad, he said, "Oh my God, you actually thought that was good"? Thus ended the greatest quartet known to mankind.

I'm not really a girly girl, so I've never really learned how to apply make-up properly so that it makes me look better and not something from the Munsters. One of my sisters can do it well but she's prepared to spend hours on it before going out, and I'm absolutely not, so the best I can do is a little mascara, blush and lipstick!!

While still in high school working at a local family owned market as an apprentice retail butcher 1st. time I tried to cut a round steak for the meat display case it was a disaster. But the old German butcher teaching me saved the day by portioning the slices and making cube steaks.

Same butcher shop 2nd. disaster that turned into success. I was to slice 11 & 12lb. canned hams for a VFW ham dinner. The slices were to be 3/4" thick. I thought the small end wasn't good so I sliced that part into what most would like for sandwiches until I got to what I thought would be serving size. I was almost on my 3rd. ham when the meat dept. manager stopped me. The last 4 were cut 3/4" from tip to tip. All were tied so the VFW cook could bake them. The 2, I cut wrong the cook asked if any of the diners were interested in buying ham sandwiches to take home. They sold out in minutes. The next order from the VFW cook came with the request to cut the small end for sandwiches. She also mentioned that the diners were 100% happy that their ham dinner were equally sized, not served smaller pieces like in the past. Better yet was that meant selling two more hams to meet the quantity needed for dinner.

Dave, then you're in good company...just like "Sheldon" on Big Bang Theory and he's brilliant!

Water skiing for me too. I tried it a few times, never did get up and then quit. Who cares? Snorkeling in the lagoon and next to the reef was more interesting. So was sailing.

Same here, furthermore I got tangled up on the line and dragged for quite a distance until that idiot driving the boat (former brother-in-law) finally realized that something was wrong. If I had not been hurting so much, I would have pounded him into the dirt as soon as we got to shore.

Driving a stick shift. Anybody drive a standard on the first try?

Oh my gosh, the first time I tried driving a stick shift, it was in a little mazda pick up truck. My first mistake was having my husband try to teach me. I found out he did not have enough patience for it. I was driving, my husband was in the passenger seat and my little 2 year old girl was in the middle. She was pushed into the seat every time I tried to start moving forward. (This was before child car seats) I just gave up after a while. I just couldn't bear to see any more seat pushing or sighing from the passenger seat. I did manage to learn to drive one but it took a long time. No problem with them any more.

When I was around 20, my date & I went out to lunch. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich. I really liked it, so I tried to make one the next day.
I put some cheese between two slices of bread & stuck it in the oven. After I put out the oven fire, a friend told me I had to cook it in a frying pan. I tried that & the bread burned again. Then I asked my girlfriend why it wasn't working. After she was finished laughing, she explained what the difference was between grilling & cooking (I thought they were the same thing). She said to butter both sides of the bread first & not to turn the fire on "High."
Cooking ain't for everyone....

Well, loved the "stick". Had an Austin- Healey Sprite e and it was very short linkage, not sychronized into first gear shift. Now, we still have the classic '91 Jeep which is short linkage 5 speed. Gotta be sure you are in gear or it will screech on ya.
