Every day I read something in the news, which I think I just can't read anything worse.. and then I do......😔😔

A mother who hid her child in a drawer to keep the baby a secret from her partner and other children for three years has been thrown behind bars.

The toddler had 'never known daylight or fresh air' until she was found crying on a bed by a visitor, Chester Crown Court heard.

The court was told how the mother hid the infant in a bed drawer in her Cheshire home, keeping her a secret from those around her.

The three-year-old, who had been fed milky Weetabix via a syringe, was so severely malnourished that she had the appearance of a seven-month-old infant.

Rachel Worthington from the Crown Prosecution Service told the court that the toddler had been left to 'fend for herself' without food for long periods of time.

She also said the the child did not respond to her own name after being discovered in the divan drawer.

The child was also found with matted hair, rashes, a cleft pallet and other medical issues for which her mother had not sought out medical advice or care, the court was told.

The tot's mother previously pleaded guilty to four charges of child cruelty.

Her mother had hid the infant away from her other siblings and partner since her birth, until she was discovered by a visitor (Pictured: The drawer where the child was kept)

The judge ruled the mother cannot be identified to protect the victim's identity - a common restriction in child protection cases.

The offences took place from around the start of 2020 until 2023, when a visitor discovered the child after hearing her cry.

After the baby girl was found, a social worker went to the home and said she was greeted by 'overwhelming horror' upon entering the room.

In her statement, she retold of how she asked the mother if she kept her three-year-old in the drawer.

The social worker was 'shocked' by the mother's lack of emotion when she answered her question 'matter of factly', stating: 'Yes, in the drawer'.

'It became an overwhelming horror that I was probably the only other face [the girl] had seen apart from her mother’s,' she said.

Due to the neglect, the child has serious developmental issues and is in foster care, the court was told.

Sentencing the woman, Recorder Judge Everett said the mother's conduct 'totally defied belief'.
He said the child had been 'starved. of any love, any proper affection, any proper attention, any interaction with others,' as well as a 'proper diet' and 'much-needed medical attention'.

He continued, describing the ordeal as 'catastrophic' for the little girl, adding that she experienced 'almost a living death in that room'.
'You attempted to control this situation as carefully as you could but by sheer chance your terrible secret was discovered,'
He added: 'I don’t remember a case as bad as this in my 46 years.'

Why do you actively seek out these topics for discussion...Seniors with their heads cut off...airplanes on fire...etc. And now infants stuffed in drawers.

I know you've ghosted me, but maybe it should be the other way around. You are the most ghoulish person I've ever known.

How strong must be the will to live of this poor little girl that she survived this. I hope that she'll get love, care, interaction and medical help in abundance now that she can recover from this torture.

she's getting all the care that she needs which is going to be quite extensive. She's 3 years old , the size of a 7 month old ( stunted growth).. she has a cleft pallet... she's never learened to walk or talk....

It just beggars belief how anyone could manage to keep a child hidden in a drawer, away from the rest of the family..she must have kept her drugged

Yes, I know and hope that it will be successful. Things happen, which are unbelievable until you hear or read of them.

When I was in jr high, my best friend's older sister who was in college was keeping two very small young kittens in her desk drawer. I adopted them to foster them because we had two cats already at my house. (They had a dog at theirs). We had lots of space for the kittens so it worked out well and they got adopted very quick because they were just so cute. But I was surprised she would do that at all because they were just tiny babies.

It's weird the things people do. Your story reminded me of this event.

Here is a question I have. If I took a baby alligator, (hypothetical situation) and kept the alligator locked up in a 3 foot x 3 foot box, that alligator would never grow beyond 3 feet. Is this also true of a human? This was told to me by the Instructor at an alligator farm in Florida.

I understand they are not the same species, however, between nature and life's characteristics may be the same in some instances, so keep that in mind.

I posed this question to a doctor who lives just up the street from me and I was surprised, but not shocked at the answer. Without looking at Google, what do you think? Would a human continue to grow?

Well in this instance the child did not grow, she remained at the size of a 7 month old despite being 3 years old...

OK, the doctor told me that the bones, muscles and ligaments would try to grow. There would probably be a lot of pain as the bones attempt to grow. It would be a very cruel act to put someone through that. The person may be able to gain a few inches, but the pain would be exacerbating. As for the organs, he couldn't comment because he didn't have an answer at hand.

As we all know, as we grow, the organs, with the exception of the eyes grow with us. The eyes stay the same size from birth to death. So, when I asked him about the organs, he immediately told me, "I don't know, but I have a good guess, however, I won't repeat it, unless I can confirm it."

According to CNN, the mother was sentenced to only 7-1/2 years for this horrific act that all but destroyed another human being's life. That short sentence is almost as shocking as her behavior.

Not sure I agree that a child wouldn't grow. Despite Chinese women's feet being tightly bound from very young ages, their feet continued to grow to normal size, but in a terrible, gnarled shape due to the bindings.

The child in this story was severely malnourished, which more likely explains her tiny size rather than that she was often confined to a small space.

I wish this was unique… but child abuse is not. Children are our most vulnerable. People who abuse like this should be subjected to the harshest punishment. Why should the mother ever be fed again?
this is always my first thought whenever i read these types of crimes.. This is why I believe the death penalty shoud be reinstated for people like this...

Death penalty? How about a real prison sentence instead of the Mickey Mouse one she received?
I'm afraid this country is well know for ''mickey mouse'' sentences.. for just about everything. I really believe this is why we have so many criminal incomers here because they know even if they get caught, they'll be out in a very few years again...

As I told my friend the doctor, I would or could imagine that not all people are the same. If a person is locked in a 3x4 drawer, how would it be possible to grow without the bones breaking? And, the bigger question is that if the person doesn’t grow in height, what about the organs. Do they continue to grow? I would expect they would.

I don’t think there is a simple answer to this question. An Orthopedic doctor may be the better person to ask these questions. If I run into an Orthopedic doctor, I will question him. I do know a few, so I would be OK approaching one of them with these questions. Now, this has me curious.

There's a beautiful movie on Hulu (free) called The Quiet Girl. It's about an Irish girl who is part of a big, very ignorant rural family with an alcoholic father and an overwhelmed mother, who don't provide their children with any real love, or not a whole lot of attention. When the mother discovers she is pregnant yet again, they decide to get rid of one of their kids for the summer, to have one less mouth to feed (the father drinks up most of their income). They ship her off with apparently little or no explanation, to spend the summer with some cousins in another rural part of Ireland. The cousins are a childless couple in their 50's.

The girl is 9 and is played by an incredible actress I forget her name. This is not a chatty movie, there is little talking, but the message comes through loud and clear. The kid arrives terrified and bewildered, but staying there for the summer, for the first time she gets love. It is heartbreaking when she has to go back. I won't tell you how it ends.

There are so many people in this world that just make you think, how could they treat their own precious child like that? Maybe not as extreme as locking her in a drawer, but there is also psychological abuse.
