Murderers only serving 20 to 30 years! Is that enough?

With no death penalty in R.I. this is the likely sentence for murder. Many people are outraged and want life sentences. I do, and so should you...
 

What? They are both equally offensive and should get life sentences! Good thing that I am not a judge...

Another one who had better not appear before Judge Ralphy. I'm trying to bring back "old sparky" so the public will be safe in their beds...
 
With respect Ralphy, this Canadian is unable to find humour in capital punishment. With my last breath I will preach the worldwide abolition of this atrocity. I abhor state sanctioned murder, just as I abhor torture. Neither are effective deterrents. Both are beyond appalling.
 
I agree... Americans seem to love, revenge, violence and plain old vindictiveness..The meaner and more hard-assed the better. If we would empty the prisons of all the people doing hard time for non-violent offenses and get rid of mandatory sentencing for drug offenses, we would have room to keep the murderers in for life..
 
Right, we have become a nation of candyasses including that wimp in the White House. Time to stiffen the spine...

This is the biggest problem with how the world views Americans.. Attitudes like this.. I call it the "John Wayne Syndrome".. Some folks just love the tough talk.. even if they themselves are the biggest candyasses around.. It's always easy to shoot of ones mouth. I would much prefer someone like our President who doesn't HAVE to talk like he's at the OK Corral.... He gets much more respect around the world that way..
 
We need another Teddy Roosevelt to restore our vigorous image in the world...
 
IMHO the "John Wayne Syndrome" hasn't worked out too well for America in the world of realpolitik. Sadly, some seem unable to look beyond insular thinking to grasp a more global perspective. This isolationism can and does have disastrous results. For any country it is far better to accept the way we are perceived by many of the world's nations, rather than feed ourselves what we wish to hear. Some other countries are at the very least bewildered by the level of and content of US prisons.

I've thought about this "syndrome".... Americans seem to love to live vicariously through the toughness... strength... and general voracity of their designated "representative" Sometimes it's the Military.. sometimes law enforcement... other times it's something as mundane as a sports team. Listen to the overweight fools talking tough about last Sunday's games... "WE" kicked their ass... "WE" are number one.. NO fools..."WE" didn't do anything... the TEAM did the work... The Military did the fighting and dying... "YOU" didn't do squat... just sat in front of your TV drinking beer and cheering..
 
Exactly, we shouldn't be isolationists. We should take on the world and show leadership, especially when it comes to destroying ISIS...

Ralphy... when YOU strap on a gun and put on a uniform and go over there to fight.... then you can talk about what "We" should do... In the meantime, you are nothing but an armchair quarterback..
 
Perhaps it is time to retire "The OK Corall" mystique and search for other cultural icons to define a nation? No disrespect intended. Canadians have our own cultural crosses to bear. Ie a tendency to be smug about how wonderful our country is without paying close enough attention to some glaring inequities.
 
I was out defending us from the communist hordes who wanted to come here and rape and pillage while Ike showed the world that we meant business, even at the end of a gun. Can I get thank you for my service from you pacifists?

I think the part that irritates me the most is that if someone here points out the problems in this country... the inequalities... etc.. often times we are told that if we don't like it... LEAVE... and are accused of being un-American or unpatriotic. When in fact WE are the more patriotic of the camps, with the ability to recognize faults and the hope and desire to make America a much better place to live..... for everyone.

The reality of the 1950's. Remember the Soviet Union and the threat to Europe? Oh, and also Communist China and the threat to the Far East?
