My cell-phone number has been compromised

I think this is the place to post a topic like this, and I think compromised is the right word when I am getting text messages from scammers. I know it's something I did online, someplace I signed up that required a phone-number. I don't put it up unless it is required, like my bank for example.

Well, now I either have to change my number, that is if I get too many calls from these pests, or hunt them down and pull their plug.

Anyone run into this and how did you handle it? For years I've had my same number, never a prob. Now, it's gotten out.:sosad:

I went on Facebook once and took a quiz. They wanted my cellphone # to see my score, which I submitted.

The next morning when I wanted to make a call, I found almost all of my minutes were almost entirely wiped out.

I called my cell phone people and explained what happened and they gave me SOME of the money back and told

me that the only thing to do was get a new number. They changed the last 4 digits of my number.

I NEVER went back on Facebook!

I just deleted my Facebook awhile back, it's invasive besides being a total flop to socialize on. They have tried to get my number and other things, like join this or join that.

Yeah, I am not a fan of facebook either.

Your cell phone carriier might be able to help you with this problem.
I dont know about your phone but I get NO scammers on my cell, there are settings on your phone that might block scmmers.

Mines an older phone I used with Straight-talk but I do know they'll change my number for me. Problem is, I'd have have to alert a long list of my new number, and what is one of those on that list are who "sold" my number:aargh:But, I do think I might be able to get on that "do not call" deal if they still have it. I think you can put a cell number on that. Thanks Davey, and everyone;) It just happened the once so I'll see if it persists before I will do anything at all:) Next thing you know they will list our cell-phone numbers, that used to be taboo, so hope it doesn't happen. I don't think it will be cause too many folks have "limited" minute plans I think;)

They already have websites where, for a few bucks, you can get someone's cell number. Easy-peasy.

Ditch the phone and get a ham radio. Or the new "Black" phone that's coming out - it's supposed to be a spy's dream-come-true - high-level encryption, all that stuff ...

The black-phone sounds good, can it be a "shoe" phone:please:

I just saw a brief mention of it the other day - supposedly it was designed for NSA employees, but it's going to be available (in a toned-down version, I'm sure) to regular citizens some time in the near future. Will probably cost a bundle ...

You've got Straight-Talk - I believe they have the "fire-and-forget-it" phones available - you just buy a whole new phone every few months and throw the old one away. That's what ALL the smart bad guys do these days.

So you lose a few numbers - how many people do you talk to on a regular basis anyway?

It's something I could consider for future, but right now, I have a ton or applications/resumes out, and those fliers to puppy-sit. I'll look into it and thanks Phil. I really like Straight-talk, not fancy (I could have a smartphone with it, but too much dough right now) just flip phone. I don't text much, will do shorty's to folks when I'm out for groceries "does anyone need anything" ;)

Okay, that makes sense.

If you have this one person's number that calls you, can't you just set the phone up to not accept their calls? A block, I believe it's called? (I'm not a phone guru by any stretch).

it was just the one call though, I don't know them, and unless they call again, or do it on a regular basis, no need to take action. Then again, I could track them down and borrow your guillotine:confused: Maybe we could do a nice feast after? I need to get out more, what do you say:partytime:

I get spam calls on my mobile phone, even though it is rarely used and switched off most of the time.

I think that is going to happen more and more. I think I mentioned earlier, it used to be cell-phone numbers were never given out. But when it comes to ways to make money these days, people will do anything they can, including "illegally" burn up our minutes. I have unlimited so not a worry, but still, seems privacy is becoming a thing of the past:(

Yeah, I am not a fan of facebook either.

Me three. I refuse to join it though my husband has an account. Way too much of everybody reading everybody elses comments in spite of the so called controls. And all the time there are stories about how invasive actions are occuring due to a Facebook connection.

Most of the "highschool" crowd I knew way back when, really aren't "friends", just people I knew, for the most part. I don't miss it, and all closer friends have my email/phone number so we'll still be in touch.

Well, I'm off to "hopefully" not burn my slice of peanut-butter toast I am craving right now;) talk to you soon, Denise;)

I only carry my phone with me if I am driving just in case of an emergency. I don't think anyone I know has the number.

that's my main purpose for it, is to have something with me on the road. Although, I find myself using it more now because of job-hunting. There is a house-phone here my landlord allows us, he even put a spare phone in each room. This is kind of "student housing" although I am done the schooling I went back for. Now just looking for work, and a more permanent place to live:) Ok, off the eat some toast, that I managed not to burn:) Have a good one and talk to you later:) Denise

YES,that can be done on todays cell phones.

Yes, I didn't mention I did know about that, and actually used it one time about 3 years ago. This was with someone I had known, that wouldn't quit calling, so I called the cell company and I think it was a small charge to block that number;)

I'm one of those weird people who still has no cell phone. Hell, I rarely use the old landline at home. BUT, I do have a company issued phone which I usually ignore. Periodically, throughout the evening, I'll check the messages just to clear them and find mostly strange texts and voicemails from god knows where. If this was happening to my personal phone I would be pretty upset.

Most here use mobiles(cell phones) instead of landlines for they get better deals with them. Not to mention the unlimited texts that most have in their deals.
