My home, once in a paradise, is now in a mess!

When I bought my home in 1986, I knew I would be here for life! A country road next to a highway, I was the only home on the corner, about 100 meters from the highway. To my right was a beautiful wooded lot. I could open my kitchen window and listen to owls, and various other creatures of the woods, so peaceful! Across the street was another wooded lot, peaceful! I could sit out on my porch and just listen to nature, relax and breathe. Retirement would be great here! Well, not so! In time, a family bought the entire lot across from me, so now I have neighbors waving at me and talking to me from across the street every time I walk out to get my mail, or just out the door.
Then, the lot to my right now is a fire station/rescue unit!!! Omg....the noise, the sirens...And, to my left, there have been new neighbors 5 times since I moved in. Gone is my peace that I had planned. I love my home, but, am looking for a new one further out in the country. So much for a peaceful retirement....it's more like paradise lost!

About the fire station. Could you speak to the local council representative for your area, to request that the fire trucks NOT use their sirens, UNTIL the trucks are a mile FROM the station, and not at all after midnight ? Some times the fire department management forget that THEY are public servants, who need to be "good neighbors " and considerate of those who live "next door " to their stations.

I spent ten years working for the largest Ambulance service in Canada, and we had a department rule about "NO sirens " for the first 4 minutes of an emergency run from our stations. And at night, we tried to only use our red and white roof lights on the way to emergency calls, only hitting the 150 watt siren when a car refused to get over, out of our way. Fire department management need to be responsive to public complaints from the tax payers.

I think it often happens. I'm isolated with the nearest neighbors a quarter mile away, but there is private land on one side of me. It has serious access issues, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone built there before I die. I've decided I'll just adjust. I'm too old to move. But I do have good neighbors. That's easy when they're a quarter mile away.

Unfortunately, due to massive increase in population in western countries... there's so many of us in the same situation. If you can afford to move then sadly that's you're only solution. Do bear in mind however the older you get the closer you need to be to towns with medical fascilities, shops and public transport and whatever you might need.. esepcially in the event that for whatever reason you might be unable to drive

That is a great suggestion, thank you! I mean this station is right next to my property....omg! I already used that as an issue when protesting my property taxes, and I will try what you suggested. Thank you!

Yes you've got it made, hope it stays that way too. The only "good neighbors" in my book, are no neighbors at all lol! Too late for that, I feel too old to bother to move as well, but, I need to get away from this area...

I know how you feel. I hate it when my neighbors try to talk to me. I need a t-shirt that says "LEAVE ME THE %$#@! ALONE!" :ROFLMAO:
I'm with you there! Any time neighbors have moved near me, I never made an effort to meet them, they always intrude on me and start to socialize. I just like peace and quiet without having to respond to anyone. I have had to be rude at times, but it works lol!

Life is tough! Many years ago we bought a lovely lot west of Prince George, BC. At the back of the lot was a beautiful view of a valley. Well, we built a beautiful 2 story log home with a big deck.

It was long before this BC hillbilly "trapper" from up north bought the lot next to us. Not only did he copy our house plan and built a log home just like ours, his black lab, on steriods, dog barked and barked at us every time anyone ever left the home. Some people just have no class!

The several hundred acre farm on one end of my three mile long road is still owned by the same family whose people settled it in the 1800’s.

The other end — well - the gorgeous 40 acre hay field that is all on a hill , now has a handful of homes on it. If there is a saving grace, they are on 5 and 10 acre plots, the houses sold for big dollars and so far they all mind their own business.

I was invaded today by the cable company who is stringing fiber optic along this road for better rural internet access. Power trucks everywhere. Thankfully my horses are older and ho-hum about such things. They stayed put in the main pasture until they were sure it was safe to come up to the barn.

I’m glad I’m old —————

Sometimes it pays to be neighborly. Which does not mean being best friends. But we know we can rely on each other during emergencies. I was floored when someone knocked on the door with a full dinner when word got around that SO had surgery. Yard guy said he can not charge for cutting grass. Trash cans were pulled from the fence.
Yes, I play trash can tango when the wInd is bad and text neighbors where their cans are. Oklahoma gets a bit windy.
We downsized to a home in a neighborhood based on location and the home being a mini of the one we left.
There are things which annoy me - dogs, school busses, soccer moms, screaming kids, .... It is part of daily life as are the Saturday 12:00 tornado drills.

Becoming old is a privilege many do not receive.

I live in North Texas, right next to Oklahoma, I am no stranger to tornadoes as we live in tornado alley. I've been in many since I was a kid.

OP, your neighbours sound like they are trying to be friendly.

Could you just wave back and then continue on?
Being friendly is one thing, but in my case, hollering or talking to me from across the road every time I walk out the door....gets old in a hurry. Some of us are not social and prefer our privacy to be respected. If I don't respond a dozen times, they should get the hint, so, I keep on ignoring them. Maybe one day, it will dawn on them I don't want to be bothered.

I hope you realize I am trying to get to know you. If you don't like attention, why do you post threads that are so controversial? They will bring a lot of attention. Do you not like personal confrontation? Small talk? Family stuff?
Paco, we are discussing neighbors here, not posts on a website lol! Big difference. I welcome any and all confrontations, small talk, etc. I am as pugnacious as anything, so, bring it on lol! Family, I have none left. Parents are both gone, that's it for me.

Waving at you was what you said in last post.

I guess you could keep ignoring them and eventually they will stop trying to be friendly.

You could also smile and wave back, that doesn't seem bothering to me.
