name-choosing for pets and other non-humans

On this forum's sunny side, pets come up for discussion quite a bit.

I have a tank of various types of goldfish. They're not pets for the same reason cabbages aren't. Like you would a cabbage, you feed your fish, and keep their bed clean, control harmful pests and disease. And for all your troubles, there is a payoff. The cabbage tastes pretty good. I'm guessing goldfish don't because they're the perfect size to be a McNugget, yet they've never had the honor. They don't do tricks or cute things, and you don't see goldfish in youtube videos with 30-thousand likes and climbing.

No, the only payoff with aquarium fish is their beauty the feeling of tranquility you get when you stare at them for a few minutes.

Unlike a buddy of mine who has all kinds of tropical fish, my goldfish have names. This buddy just calls his fish by their species name: the redfin butterfly, the queen anglefish, the percula clownfish. And there's always a "the" in front.

My fish and I will never have occasion, or the ability, to address each other, but just for the fact that I get to stare at them without their consent, I figured they deserved names.

I gave them descriptive names, otherwise I would probably have to keep re-naming them, and I wanted to be consistent.

Spot is white with an orange spot on his head
Adolf has a little black moustache
Liszt has long ridges along the ends of his side fins (piano fingers)
Croaker sometimes swims belly-up
Oprah Vader is a big-bellied, bug-eyed black molly (don't get upset about it, it's done)
Fanny has a very fancy tail
Brain is one of those that looks like his brain is on the outside of his his head
Pinky is, obviously, pink (and is also Brain's sidekick)
and Bubbles' eyeballs have actual bubbles attached to them

So if you haven't already exhausted the topic, what did you name your pet (or non-human companion), and why?

I will not judge you if you actually named a cabbage. But if you named a cabbage and then ate it, I might have a problem with that.

Cute names for your fish Wrigley's. :)

My husband chose the name for our new puppy Bigfoot, because he looks like a Sasquatch and he also had big looking feet as a baby (mostly hair). Our Manx cat is named Loki, after the Norse God of mischief.

That's awesome...fish rock! We have a tank of Koi but rarely do they get named. Makes it less personal when they get sucked into the filter. But fish definitely have personalities. The tank is in the dining divider. If I'm standing at the counter doing dishes they all gather in the closest corner. I know they're watching me.

Our critters have been alternately named by me and the kids. I'm a big fan of The Band. We have Caledonia, Ophelia, Levon, we've had a Jaime n' others. Chii is an anime character, Stumpy is a bobtail Manx, Boo is black and tiny, Mr. Foote poses with his foot hanging. The rats get their name changed weekly, but I know there's a Cupcake and Cinnamon Bun.

The chihuahua we had when he was a puppy had black markings around his eyes that looked like a mask. We named him Bandito because of that. The markings went away as he grew up (4 pounds). He was a great little dog and we had him 13 years.

We had an Amazon Parrot named "Pepper". When our son got a parakeet, he was named "Salty". We had Pepper 35 years.

I have a dining area but no table and chair, so that's where the fish tank is. I painted an underwater scene on the window in there because I was told too much sunlight makes the tank get grotty.

The rats sound yummy. and, btw, I write a lot but only in my journal, which no one sees.

Pepper and Salty, that's cute. Seems fitting for birds, though I'm not sure why. A pirate thing maybe.

Gods names. Good idea that I will use if I ever get more fish.

My roommate and I share a dog, he pays for everything pet related and I feed her and let her in and out for bathroom breaks. We picked the name Jade for her because she is part Sheri pei. We toyed with the idea of naming her Foo (as in foo dog) but decided that wasn't a very nice name.

We used to have a house rabbit named Beezus (nickname for Beatrice, as in Beatrice Potter) until we found out some time after we got "her" that she was a "him". At that point, "he" was renamed Beezel (nickname for Beelzebub, for more reasons than his sexual orientation alone, which was shaky at best......he spent a large part of his time humping our other house rabbit, Weezel, who also started out as a putative female named Weezy but showed his true...uh....colors at maturity). So, instead of two sweet little girl bunnies, we got two oversexed sweet little boy bunnies.

My son had a parakeet that had feathers on its breast that closely resembled a German swastika. Of course he named him swastika. I wasn't happy about that so when I was around he called him Henry.

I have only one pet. Her name is Lily. I chose that because I like the name and it's simple. I learned a long time ago never to name your dog something you don't mind yelling. When I was young my best girlfriend's brother named their dog 'woolly booger'. One day her mom drove us all to the mall and her dog jumped out of the car and she and her brother had to run all over the mall parking lot calling loudly " woolly booger woolly booger woolly booger come here woolly booger.." Taught me a lesson right there :D

I felt the same way about women in college.

I've never cared for dogs. A friend and I sort of share his little dog in that while the friend's at work all day, I walk it, and feed it as needs be. In exchange the friend comes in and feeds my fish while I'm traveling once or twice a year for two or three weeks.

The dog's name is Doodley. It's a pug.

Good on your son to not let PC'ness get in the way of giving a bird a reasonable name. It grew feathers in a swastika, it deserves the recognition.

Those are good names. When I named my fish, I also assigned gender. Because, really, who cares?

I should have said you don't see EXCITING fish videos. Well, unless someone's reeling in a marlin or something.

Yes, on the college girls (or any pretty girls) but I haven't loitered around a college since that last written warning.

Ah, okay. You mean boiling a goldfish or something? Yeah - I did an exhaustive search and couldn't find any "boiling goldfish" vids.

That's why I always used a duck blind on campus. QUACK-QUACK!

In this area, one of those cammo nets would be less conspicuous - and more useful.
