Netherlands Plans to Allow Euthanasia for Under-12s

Government says move will help children 'suffering hopelessly and unbearably'

The Netherlands is set to become the second country in the world to allow euthanasia for terminally ill children under 12. After months of debate in the country's ruling coalition, Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said regulations would be changed to help "a small group of terminally ill children who agonize with no hope, and unbearable suffering," the Guardian reports. At least two doctors must approve the procedure, he said.

Snippet from an article I read, Jerry.

"Euthanasia is already legal in the Netherlands for infants under one year, with parental consent, and of minors 12-15 with their consent and that of their parents. Voluntary euthanasia is available to those aged 16-17 without parental consent".

Voluntary Euthanasia will become a much more normal event in the years to come
When I worked in a Nursing Home I had a chat with one of the older nurses and she
hated seeing the residents in pain and only able to eat via parenteral nutrition
'Parenteral nutrition is the feeding of nutritional products to a person intravenously,
bypassing the usual process of eating and digestion'
She explained that due to the ageing population there will not be enough medical staff available
If there is absolutely NO chance the patient would survive with some quality of life
then one option could be Assisted Voluntary Euthanasia
However this is not undertaken lightly because there is a medical evaluation done first
It would be a calm and peaceful procedure where the patient will just gradually go to sleep never to wake up
That is also checked that the patient has succumbed to the lethal cocktail injected
Sounds ominous but we don't let our animals suffer like this however we expect our elderly to suffer this way
I am all for Assisted Voluntary Euthanasia whatever the age of the patient
At least that patient will die with a modicum of dignity

I agree 100%, Peram.

Nothing, and no one, deserves to suffer.

I watched and lived through my mom suffering, and it will haunt me until the day I die.

This is a big decision for an 8 year old to make. We lowered the voting age to 18 here in the U.S. to appease the Hippie movement back in the 60's. By doing so, it was supposed to soften some of the adverse protests that were being held by doing sit-ins, going days without eating, etc. The main issue for the younger generation was "If we can go to war and die, we should be able to vote." After that was passed, all of a sudden, it seemed that when someone turned 18, they could enjoy what any other adult could do, like going to 'X' rated movies, drinking low grade alcohol and the like.

The other night, I was watching some of Joe Biden's Town Hall Meeting on ABC and maybe some of you may also have caught it. During the program, a lady tells the story that her year 8 old daughter approached her and told her that she wanted to be a transgender. Again, this is a mighty big step for an 8 year old to be making.

The issue at hand is that most so-called "Specialists" insist that the human brain isn't developed enough to be making these types of decisions. This is why when a child kills another person, they are not held accountable to the point that an adult is.

I thought politics were not permitted ?

Equally important, IMO, is for a Senior to have an "end of life" directive in their wills, etc....especially if they have close family members. The spouse and kids can suffer badly, emotionally, during such an extended and hopeless illness. Far better, IMO, for a person to make their wishes known, in advance, and bring the family onboard with those wishes.

For me, being doped up with some pain medicine, while nature takes its course would be a far better alternative than lying in some hospital bed for weeks/months....hooked up to machines to maintain a heartbeat, and donating vast sums of money to the doctors/hospital to no avail.

My sentiment to a T.

(Post 9: A question: I wonder what 18-22 year old soldiers being shot at while in the service of our country would think of euthanasia?)

Euthanasia is a volatile concept,-can you guarantee that the person doing the dying is the only one making that decision?
People our age are more of a burden than an assetđź’€, proceed with caution.

I think the take away from this article is "terminally ill children", who are enduring intractable pain. The only way the child will ever feel relief is when death occurs. What does prolonging the child's life benefit him? I've endured great pain the last 30 years of my life. There hasn't been one damn benefit. And what great benefit did you gain from my agony?

I am all for it. When one of my uncles was dying from brain and throat cancer (terminal), he was hooked up to a machine. He did not have a living will. He was in excruciating pain and wanted to end it. His daughter refused to authorized pulling the plug. Yet, as someone said above, we show more compassion for animals.

My post has nothing to do with politics. The post was just referring to a segment of the town hall meeting that correlates to the OP's thread.

IMO, you turned it political when you introduced a video depicting a woman soliciting answers to her questions, from a candidate currently running for office. The democrat running for president no less.
