Yesterday at the Men's Final at Wimbledon, 20yr old Spanish player, Carlos Alcaraz defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic in 5 sets 1-6,7-6,3-6,6-4
This was Alcaraz's 2nd Grand Slam title, he won U.S. Open last yr
I didn't watch the match just saw the highlights, Carlos is an exciting player to watch, the changing of men's tennis has begun. I just wish Novak would retire,,he's got enough Grand Slam titles at 23, nothing else for him to prove
Alcaraz is the 3rd youngest male to win behind Boris Becker who won his 1st Wimbledon age 17, Bjorn Borg won age 20

I watched some of it, and that young player has great skill, a unique style, and was impressive in keeping his calm, and composure, during the intense 5th set.

I found it amazing how well the very young man handled himself, and set a good example, in multiple ways, imo.

I really don't care for tennis but know what events are going on because I read ESPN daily. When a notification popped up on my phone that Alcaraz won Wimbledon, it was a great feeling. I don't think too many people like Novak for many reasons. He's a complainer and is very childish on the court when things don't go his way.

Congrats to Alcaraz!

The contrast between the behaviors and demeanor of the two competitors, on that particular day, during this particular match, and the world-televised event...

was on extreme display, and markedly evident in that final set, when Novac acted out his usual fiery temperament and explosive slamming of his racket against the net pole, and other actions typical of some of the tennis greats;
while the young man, at this event, appeared to have calm and poise, and to maintain the intentional focus on his goal of playing great tennis and being a world class athlete.

Of course, both of them have proven their extremely high level skills at the sport.

That is interesting, and thanks for the thread, and for that detail.
I had wondered about such a young man as Carlos, winning at Wimbledon, and hadn't heard that mentioned.

It was mentioned, that Carlos had not been playing on the grass surfaces as long or as well, as the other more usual tennis surfaces, and how quickly and well, his team of coaches had helped him to learn and to improve at that.
Amazing feat, for sure. Defeating someone who has been great on grass court, for years.

The first time I have ever watched a tennis match and I was surprised at the time Djokovic wasted bouncing his balls before serving, he was given a time violation for taking too long over his serve at a critical point in the second set.

I found it frustrating so can only imagine how it was for Carlos Alcaraz, an amazing player, who, I am sure at times, was holding his racket by his fingertips !

I watched most of it but it was very late at night down under. I was lying in bed at the time. I saw the 4th set through bleary eyes and decided I really needed to go to sleep. As I was expecting Djokovic to win the last set I switched off the TV.

I was surprised and delighted to wake up the next morning to learn that Wimbledon has a new champion.
