New Movies = Poor Quality

Ok, I know that many wouldn't agree with me but I am finding more & more evidence that the quality of new movies has really gone down the drain in comparison to the old ones. For example, last night we started watching "The Silence" with Hugh Bonneville & Douglas Henshall on BritBox Channel. If you watch closely, the movie is terrible.

Many people talk at the same time, many scenes shot in the dark so it's hard to tell what the hack is even going on & most of the scenes are shaky like the camera was on the shoulders of a man running around & shooting. There are sometimes very closeup scenes showing a person's one eye & only his nose. Really? What is the point? One Eye & the nose does not add anything to the story. There are many movies like this. I am getting so disgusted with these new movies that often I order DVDs from Amazon where I feel that I get quality entertainment.

Last night I put on "Mr. Novak" about a high school teacher & then "Highway Patrol". Both films were TV shows from the 50s but the actors spoke clearly & they shot scenes from a tripod not from someone shoulder. Notice I haven't said anything about profanity but that is another topic. So, anyone here find the same thing when you watch movies or is it just me?

I've noticed that too. Sometimes the dialogue is garbled too. Try to turn on closed captions it says there are no closed captions for this selection. Sometimes I'll watch the first 15 minutes, if it doesn't get better, I move on to something else. I've been doing that a lot lately.

iam a big fan of tv films -and I have to say the soundings are very bad ' actually find without being rude
that some tv American actors mumble a lot and dont speak clear so I have to put up subtitles which I am not keen on #doing .

Shooting dark/muted scenes must be a trend these days. I guess it's to create a "mood". I often have real difficulty seeing what's on screen. Also, to create a mood, they have police detectives going into crime scenes late at night, on their own .. and, of course, they never flick a switch to turn on a light

Plot, what is the plot?

The blot is high speed chases, multiple murders, blds falling down or being blown up, crazed behavior, savage behavior, intrigues that are confusing, events that occur which have nothing to do with anything.

Brit detective shows normally have one body, Americans must have dozens...
No stressed out junkies, no really nutty characters...

In The UK and England the quality of films and series on tv have deteriorated regarding transmission and sound quality especially the latter. Garbled indistinct diction is common on most main channels. I have to use the sub title button on the remote more and more. :(

I used to watch TV show 'Downton Abbey'{ I stopped after Season 4} there were a couple cast members e.g. Joanne Froggatt"Anna Bates' Sophie McShear'Daisy' half the time I couldn't understand what they were saying

I agree with you Packerjohn!
We watched an action movie the other night that had very little dialogue, no story line, lots of shooting, and lots of blowing stuff up. It was exhausting to watch. Then it occurred to me~The movie looked just like a filmed version of a video game.
There was no point to any of it~just bang, bang, shoot um up, good guys & bad guys. If this is what passes as entertainment~count me out! How BORING!
Another awful kind of movies has way too much talking. The leading actors make small talk throughout the movie. They never mutter anything of content. It's not funny, entertaining, or insightful. It's just BLAH. Sometimes it's 3 or 4 women talking about nothing through the entire movie. Other times they have a romantic couple doing the same. The actors sometimes have a sexy scene that doesn't enhance the script, probably to keep viewers from falling asleep. I can last about 20 minutes before quitting this kind of movie.
If this is the future of entertainment, I'm going back to watching movies I've already seen that are good.

Sound that varies from barely there to painfully loud makes me reach for remote. I'm told it is simulating reality but there is no plot or actor that will keep me if I have to keep adjusting the volume.

I hear you loud & clear. We pretty well follow that 5 or 10 minute rule. If I find that the movie is "bad" for whatever reason (profanity, excessive violence, poor acting, poor photography, etc.) we just stop & move on. Guess that is why we love the old TV shows (Streets of St. Francisco, Quincy, Mr. Novak, etc.) because they are good & no profanity.

So many movies feel that they can't be presented without frequent lacings of profanities and obscenities in the dialogue, plus gratuitous nudity. Graphic violence and an over-reliance on special effects also seems to be a must. When all of this is added to a weak plot and poor sound and camera angles, the overall effect can be quite unsatisfying...

We turn on closed captioning for almost all English speaking shows or movies that are from outside the US and Canada. Also some that feature strong southern US accents.

As for the mumbling issues, I fear that's more closely related to our aging ears than modern sound techniques.
If you watch those same shows with young people you'll notice they can catch every word...

We don't watch shoot-em-up, car chase, violent movies. There are plenty of other choices between AZ Prime, Netflix, and our local library. Recently watched Yesterday (excellent), Rocketman (pretty good), Booksmart (amusing), and The Wife (very good).

I use closed caption for any movies with accents, too! I live in the south and am used to the accents, but often the actors in these movies and shows aren't southern and don't do well faking them.

Audio can be a major problem. However, the problem lays more with the tv than the show I watch all shows with quality earphones Great sound and you don’t miss a word 😊
I got 2 DVD players. My Blue Ray does the subtitles nicely but cannot get CC (Closed Caption). After much study I found out that Blue Ray never do CC. So, I bought a small Sony non-Blue Ray player so I can watch CC shows like "Have Gun Will Travel". I don't use headphones but have 5 channel stereo with a rear speaker right behind me. Seems to help.

We just watched the 2017 Wonder Woman movie with Gal Gadot. It was great, to us. Much better than Linda Carter could ever do. Gal was a Model, Miss Israel and served in the Israel Defense System as a combat/martial arts trainer.

We no longer have a regular dvd, only a Blue Ray. Young actor/actresses seem to talk to fast, but then again, that could just be our age. Some have an accent that can be hard to understand, especially if they are talking fast.

I agree with all of the above. The talent pool in film making has apparently all but dried up. I watch very little these days and what I do watch is usually "vintage".
Ever watch Bette Davis or Burt Lancaster. There was real talent. You didn't need fancy graphics in their movies because their acting was so great. These days, if you can't act you can always get undressed or swear. Young people seem to like that.

I haven't watched a movie in a long time but the other night and my wife saying there's nothing on the tube, I suggested she check out the
movie on PBS. It was a good one and had been many years since we hd seen it. We watched it again, "Guess Whose Coming To Dinner."

What sucks is looking up who the actors are and not recognizing one name. Thank Ted Turner for TCM. New movies have too much whispering, too much graphic violence and when it comes to sex in the new movies the two people can't wait to get to a bed so they stand there ripping each others clothes off, very superficial since those scenes are the same now in all movies. Last note, enough with the F bomb. Can you imagine if they re-did "Gone With The Wind"?
