New TV........

My old one died recently. New one sounds same as Gary's ...... LG 49" from Wally's for about same price. Wonderful picture even if there is a glare from open door on screen. I'm self-taught and basics are pretty simple. I'm gradually learning about new features but I'm really not interested in making it do exotic freaky things.

I cut cable and watch 'a la carte' with Roku box - Netflix, Amazon Prime, U-tube, some PBS, some BBC, some CBS, some NBC. I usually go to Netflix, PBS or Prime for no ads but there are many channels that offer a variety of movies and docs WITH ads. I rarely watch these as I'm too old to waste time watching junk.

My old set was a Samsung with much smaller screen. Picture was OK with smaller screen but reading script (description of shows, guides, etc.) sometimes involved squinting/guessing. No guessing now. Script big and bold. I doubt I would have replaced old set if it had not died but glad it did. I don't watch much TV but when I do, I want it to be a pleasant experience.

BTW, the 49" was in middle of size range appropriate for my room size and distance from viewing chair.

My LG flat-screen, works well. Have had it about a decade, now?
Wonderful picture!

Sounds good.....I know the wall mount & labor, old TV removal, add to it , but it is what i want, and what I need so.......Ahhh the price of growing old.

There should be some good sales coming as the Christmas season approaches. Check the current prices, then watch for a nice price drop in a month or two. An old TV would probably cost as much, or more, to repair, as a new one....even if parts were still available. My wife has an old Sanyo CRT TV in her sewing room, and we will be watching for a nice 32" TV for her Christmas present....Walmart had a Samsung 32" for $99 a few weeks ago, and if that sale pops up again, we'll get one. The 42" Panasonic Plasma we have in the family room is almost 14 years old, and still working great....what we paid for it years ago, would buy a deluxe 65" today,.

The "tv guy" is the guy that actually repaired it the last time I had a problem. He narrowed it down to being the fault of my direct-tv control box. Called them, used his {ID} they approved his charge, it ended up costing me nothing. So!...he's the guy I called.
Next time you have problem call Direct-Tv and they will troubleshoot it for you. They will sometimes do it and you do nothing or next to it. Reception is controlled through system. If they can't remedy it they should be able to tell you it is the TV. Glad to here all is well now.

OMG 37 years --was thinking how many have I had in that time ---sounds like it died -but been a good set !
so I went out and got a 60inch - Samson as hubbs like footy ' and both like a big screen - if u enjoy your tv get a 55 inch
to enjoy - dont let him flog u a expencive set ' google some prices before he comes … and make sure he shows the remote and how it works ………….

Life without TV. We lived that until late 40's. In those days tv was only on several hours a day. The entire family gathered around that 12" screen and watched the fare of the evening. Remember that's when TV dinners came along (before microwave ovens). We put them in the big oven. Things were simpler then and maybe even better.

I would imagine that a lot if people will dispute the following, but I would avoid Samsung and LG. Very few repairmen are fixing them. The good news is that it isn’t often that they need repaired. I just checked my”Consumer Reports” and they recommend the Samsung for dependability.

As soon as mine goes out I'm going for the smart TV..

Been starin at a line across the bottom for awhile now and it just happens to be right where the captions are written.

My husband can read it so he has to read them to me..when he get tired of it we'll get a new one....;)

Any opinions ? My old one, [37] years old, finally gave up this morning. I've tried all I know, to get the picture back on, but to no avail. I have audio, on all channels, but no picture.

Given my current physical state, I do not feel like walking around some big-box store...to shop.... so i have a TV guy coming tomorrow morning. I'll see what he suggest for the room size, etc. Just thought I'd ask here in advance.

BTW...smart tv or no smart tv ?
"37 years old?" Did it come with a free Image result for Antique Bicycle

I would suggest a smart tv, I have looked at some and the smart ones will take a little getting used to, but not much at all. Get someone to install/set up and save the extra $200 installation fee.
