WASHINGTON — Just nine days after it was announced he would be succeeding Alex Trebek as the host of "Jeopardy!", Mike Richards is stepping aside.

The move comes after a report on the website The Ringer revealed demeaning comments about women, Jews and other groups that Richards had made on a podcast several years ago.

In a statement Friday morning, Richards said moving forward with him as host would be “too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show.”

“As such, I will be stepping down as host effective immediately. As a result, we will be canceling production today,” Richards said in a note to "Jeopardy!" staff.

His note indicated that he will remain the show’s executive producer.

The iconic game show had just begun filming next season's first episodes on Thursday.

The Anti-Defamation League on Thursday had called for an investigation into Richards' past comments. "New 'Jeopardy!' host Mike Richards' disparaging remarks about Jews, women & Asians are no laughing matter," the ADL said in a statement.

The show now plans to bring back guest hosts to continue production for next season as it works to once again search for a permanent host to serve as Trebek's successor, according to the statement. "

I heard a blip about this on the radio this morning. Apparently he made a comment about women dressing like hookers. My first thought was "I wish I could dress like a hooker."

Oh well, I don't really watch Jeopardy. It makes me feel stupid.

I wish that I could dress like a hooker too. Not every day maybe but more often than just at Halloween. Anyway, it's a sign of the times. Too many people walking around with a chip on their shoulder and a pebble in each of their shoes just so they don't have to deal with feeling happy. Not for themselves or anyone else. I'm waiting for someone in the public eye to offend someone by what is revealed by their purchase record taken from their Kroger or some other shopping loyalty card. "OMG! Did you hear about (famous name here) yet? It seems that he uses Colgate toothpast instead of Crest and EVERYONE knows that Colgate comes in a red box. So that means he must have voted for (fill in the blank). Yes, they got the info from his shopping record at Kroger! Who ever would have thought?" Every day, some one makes sure that life's just a little less fun for most of us.

i agree that things have been getting out of hand with"political correctness" in all things but given that this was his second "situation" he had no cchoice but to quit.i hear that he is still executive producer.i wonder if that will last.

The world's going down the crapper when you have to be afraid to be funny.
Yes. On that note, I've seen videos of big-name comedians who say it's difficult to be funny when you have to (in effect) walk on eggshells.

And then there are the ones who just go ahead and do whatever they're going to do. :)

I can honestly say that I have never dreamt of dressing like a common hooker. But a high end escort-maybe. I'm sorry, but Jeopardy is a TV show. It is not a religion. We don't have to get a bunch of old men, seal them in a room. And when they decide on a new host, we see white smoke coming out of a chimney over the studio. And, come on, the entertainment industry is not noted for its morally correct, let alone PC participants. Plus, I don't know why the host of a TV show has to be so pristine pure, and angelic.

Today, I'm reading that another top contender for the job, Mayim Bialik, has been ruled out because, about this time last year, she said she was unsure about getting her kids the Covid vaccine due to allergies they had. Now she, her husband, and their kids have all been vaccinated, but that moment of hesitation has canceled her out.

I just think it was rotten that the general public was led to believe that one of the “guest hosts” would become the new permanent one, whereas Mike Richards, a Sony insider, had the job sewn up before his past comments were revealed. Now we’re going to be back to guest hosts again, and I wonder who has the inside track now...and the answer, is? 🤔
