Not a good way to end my shared birthday with my grandson.

We drove to my daughters home over the weekend to celebrate my grandsons birthday as well as my own, we were born on the same day in July. We had a wonderful time and as usual my daughter made it special for both of us.

My daughter lives in a development with a community pool that has a cute little book exchange nearby. It is built out of wood with siding and has make believe windows and is on posts. The front has two doors that when opened has plenty of space for people to leave or take books.
I save my books that I've read and take them when I visit.

Just before we were about to leave I asked my daughter if she wanted to drive me there since it was so hot. She parked the car and I got out and made my way to the exchange,
I opened the doors and noticed many of the books were not left in an orderly fashion. I was arranging them so I could read the titles and leave mine. I guess I disturbed a wasps nest and they flew at me with a vengeance.

I was stung on both hands and on my upper lip. My daughter was behind me at that point and was stung also.
We made our way back to the car and by the time I got back to the house my tongue was numb.

My son in law is a doctor and gave me some meds he had. I'm not allergic to stings but it was scary when my tongue was affected.
We stayed for awhile making sure I was feeling ok.
My daughter notified the HOA and they were going to take care of the wasps.

By evening the pain has subsided and my tongue was better but the area is still swollen today.

I noticed there are always some children's books inside. I'm glad my grandsons weren't with us and hope other kids hadn't gotten stung earlier.

A birthday I won't forget.

Oh, no Ruth so sorry! I've been noticing a lot of wasps around here, we don't usually get that many but this year, wow. Every time I try to deadhead my geraniums, there are so many wasps. I hope you get over it soon, goodness.

That's terrible Ruth, I've been stung by yellow jackets a few times and it is painful....but never on the lip, having your tongue numb and swollen had to be scary too. Thank goodness your son in law was right there to assist.

Ow! 😖 Wasp stings HURT!! And unlike bees, they can sting repeatedly.

My daughter and her husband made one of those little libraries for their subdivision, and when they did the research for how to build one (making it waterproof, sustainable in snow and extreme heat etc,) making it critter-free (snakes, wasps, spiders and the like) was also apparently mentioned. Apparently it’s a serious concern.

I don’t know what they did, but Paige has been maintaining it for close to 10 years now, and there has never been any problem other than overcrowding of books! It’s very popular!

I’m sorry you were stung so severely, but so glad you’re on the mend now. 🥰

Oh my, that is terrible, but it's good that you told us,
so that we can care about you :(😿❤️💛
And your daughter, too,

And so that we can be on the lookout for wasps, ourselves too, if we're anyplace like that, at this time of the year in particular.
Now that you reminded and alerted us. (Thank you)

I'm glad the children were not along with you.

I hope you are recuperating quickly now!
