Now that you have SF what would you do without it?

That was the worst Annie...always being the new kid in school when everyone had already made firm friendships..
I can understand to an extent Holly,Hubby's parents moved from one state to another ,when he was young he attended 8 different schools before entering what we call high school....He still feels the effects now ... Prior to us taking up dancing he rarely/ wanted to speak to anyone other than his best friend .. He felt it had an effect by not being able to form friendships because of his parents unstable lifestyle,

I do not consider any of you my friends - in fact, I loathe you all.

If SF were not here I could get on with my life and visit my other forums such as Naughty Nuns News and The Cat Spankers' Forum.

I don't travel nor do I work, so no loss there.

Most of my long term friends have passed away, the only remaining ones do not live close. Have a few acquaintances, not anyone I feel any real rapport with. Have some "online friends" for over ten years. I find the other groups/forums I am on are not the same as SF, even though some are based on common interests. Perhaps, as I have said before, because of the age group and common life situations. Like Annie and Jim, I check in here more often, can relate to and am interested in others lives, love the humor, am concerned when others have problems and enjoy hearing of others joys. It sounds like this constituents a feeling of friendship.

The main problem with online communication is the parties involved cannot see the inflections or obvious expressions of each other so it is very easy to misjudge the comment. Still, in my case, it's something to do, to try to interact with those roughly in my peer group.

As long as you remember I have a pretty dry and biting sense of humor most days..............
And if I mean to insult you, it will be pretty hard to miss. :playful:

Knock, Knock. I'm sorry I'm late to the discussion because I could have been commiserating with the military-kids all this time. I know exactly what most of you have gone through, pretty much, since I was a navy brat and moved every 3 years also…except, even worse was when I went to 3 different high schools. I entered the 3rd high school in the middle of of the year, my junior yr. That was the worst. But I still felt very blessed to have a nice family and to have experienced much of the US and Japan. And I learned social skills each time I had to adjust. I'll bet it's a lot easier for military kids these days due to the social media…staying connected is easy (of course it's not the same as real life but still connected)

So back to Jim's question…What would I do without SF. Well, I've only been here 2 1/2 weeks but I already feel close to this wonderful group of people that have seemed to accept me so graciously into their inner circle. They've been helpful and kind and encouraging and caring. They're funny and smart and interesting and open with all things good and not-so-good. I don't see that in the real world…the instant openness and acceptance that is...even when strangers are about in here.

I've observed some hiccups (like an angry person that briefly jumped in today to try to ruin the fun) but Admin/Mod are on it pronto and all is swiftly restored. That's impressive. We're always going to have the good and not-so-good come and go. But Admin/Mod attentively fine tunes this place for all of us to enjoy…for free…can't complain, right? I've watched them in action and they are good! It's an enormous amount of time and effort I would imagine. It's some great entertainment here. I'm grateful for that as I'm sure most are. So I plan to stay as long as SF will have me unless my free time is challenged by real life stuff.

Did I answer your question, Jim? Probably not ha:rolleyes:

..yep that's true we scots are sarcastic to those we like and those we know can take it...I was terribly sarcastic for the first few years I was away from Scotland , and it upset lots of people because they thought I was being nasty, and I really wasn't and I was shocked when people were downright nasty in return ..so I learned to tone it down over the years and now it's almost all gone...but it does resurface on the odd occasion .
I don't really think Sarcasm works too well on a forum without the use of a lot of emoticons..simply because you can't hear the intonation in someone's voice

Definitely need to use the emoticons on a forum!

I always thought the English were just as bad, or nearly as bad, as Scots when it comes to sarcastic humour? My dh's best friend in his school in Enfield was English and was even worse than hubby! He was so sharp and quick with his wit.

My daughter is very quick witted...superfast... as is my husband...but it's witty rather than sarcastic. I can't say overall I've found the Southern English to be sarcastic, they take life far more seriously than most of the rest of England I find..the kings and queens of Sarcasm and wit generally are scousers.

My dh hates when I call his humour sarcasm but I don't know how else to explain 'taking the pish/piss'.

My dad and my brother were/are very quick witted.

Before I came up to Scotland permanently I had several temp jobs down there. One was in Hertford for the council. I found them to be piss-takers and I did not like it one bit! I was still trying to adjust to the differences and learn the new words and even what the hell A4 was!

yep I know that council office very well...when I first moved to Hertford straight from Scotland, it was a very gentile little market town (still a little market town but not so gentile anymore), but the saracasm, not wit and definitely not funny..was aimed at me constantly about my accent!! People would actually talk to someone standing behind me and sneer..''what IS she saying''?...grrr!! Hated them all for a while.. however in those days I was an angry little Glaswegian so they eventually got it back in spades.

My Dad was career Army, but we only moved 4 times and it wasn't always great distances. If SF went away, it would be like when Oprah went off the air, so what? On the other hand, if my doctor left town, yes, I could get another doctor, but I am comfortable with the one I have and would not like to start over. I chose him because I know he will out live me.

This board is good for sharing things that I missed out on while flying around the country. It is a form of entertainment, but education also. There are some very intelligent people here and I take what they say, verify it and sometimes find myself smarter for having read their words.

As a navy brat: MI, TN, MI, MA, FL, finally back in MI at age 12. Then as an adult: TN, England, Scotland, Uganda, Scotland.
Annie and and Jim, thank you. Annie and holly, I've enjoyed reading about how your countries differ regarding sarcasm and how it comes across online vs realtime. I hear you. Also, interesting was all the places you've moved to annie.

So I started counting mine up on my fingers, FL, GA, PA, CO, Japan, PA, MD, northernVA/DC as a child. As an adult CA, centralVA, and NC. Interestingly it's the same number but you blew me out of the water with the variety... US, England, Scotland, and Uganda!

Yes sarcasm and irony is common where I live in middle England, though I use wit mainly like your daughter, but as I age tbh I can't take a lot of life that seriously. :)

Holly, I love your avatar! Soo want shoe/shoes like that! So many shoes, so little time!

Oh shali, I have sooo many shoes...I have shoes like that too, but without the flowers in them obviously...:D I have so many high heels, but sadly now with the back problem I can very rarely wear them and when I do it's simply car to bar but even then I suffer the next day.. so they languish in the huge snap lid box not unloved but unworn .. :(

You've had quite a variety!

Long story shortish..England because that's where dh worked but he also had a house in Scotland. I only lasted 6 months in London. Didn't like it and loved Scotland. So I stayed in Scotland and dh commuted on weekends and school holidays by air.

Uganda was two years while dh volunteered to train teachers.
