Oh Deer!

Do you put food out for them? When my kids and I lived up in the hills, I'd toss out table-scraps (safe ones) and vegetable peelings for the deer and foxes and raccoons. I'd dump it far enough from the cabin so they didn't get into my stuff, but close enough so the kids could watch and appreciate them.
I also have, besides those, coyotes, black bear and now and then a cougar passes through. A family of hawks nests in the tree behind the barn every year.

Same here. We have several deer hanging around. Recently, I counted 7 of them in the yard, and there is a doe with 2 fawns that often beds down in our yard at night. They made the wife a bit mad when they ate all her flowers one night a couple of weeks ago. There hasn't been much hunting in our area the past couple of years, so the herd is growing....I even saw a nice 6 point buck a few days ago. They are getting so tame that if we step out onto the porch, they just stop and look at us for a few seconds, then go back to their "munching".

There used to be a lot of deer in my area but the population has been intentionally thinned. I do see a few in the evenings when I take the dog for our walks at sunset.

I saw one on the side of the read on a fairly busy street early at night after the woods were cleared in that area.

Love watching them too. There's a mama with twins currently hanging out in the back yard in the afternoons. They are energy plus and keep her busy.

A couple of weeks ago, I camped at a state park with a lake that has marshy edges. A fawn fell in and bogged down in the mud with just its head above water. A couple of guys who were also camping rescued it. The guy that pulled it out and carried it to the woods was late teens or early 20s. The fawn licked his neck and jaw the whole time he carried it towards the edge of the woods that mama had run to when the guys approached the fawn. He set the fawn down and before it ran to the woods, it rubbed his leg several times with its head. I didn't see all this but saw the pics. That young man will always treasure the memory of the appreciative kisses and hugs!

My neighbor used to put out food for the deer. And deer really don't need this, and you have absolutely no idea what you are feeding. Deer have evolved to eat what is seasonal, and what they can digest in summer, may not be digestible in winter., even if they eat it. We had bears coming around, etc. Plus, we were overrun with mice. When she moved, we had mice everywhere, since they weren't being fed. The mice were running around all over her yard.

We have them roaming around all the time. They love it here, especially in the wooded areas. They cause all sorts of problems, but they are so beautiful to look at!
