Oh! The noise! The noise!

What is a noise- no matter how innocuous - that drives you absolutely nuts?

Yes, wind chimes, definitely. Many years ago, we were looking at a house to rent and the very-close neighbor had about a dozen big wind chimes hanging from the eaves of his house on the side closest to the house we were looking at. It was deafening. Deal breaker.
Before I knew how much I hated them, I bought one for my mother as a gift, and put it up on her porch. After a few weeks I asked her if I could take it down. She said yes. :)

I hate all noises, after awhile the radio and TV gets on my nerves. Mostly it's the rhythm of the noise. I have a white noise machine. Helps block out other noises that drive me nuts. We have a large chest freezer on the other end of the house and the sound of the motor drives me crazy at night. The problem with the white noise machine is that it repeats itself and I lay there at night listening for it. In my case it is all psychological. When we moved into our new home we were surrounded by farm land. I got wind of the fact that it was sold and they were going to put up a development . I was very upset about this. One morning while in bed I heard a loud noise. It kept me awake with my stomach churning. I was sure they were there to destroy the farmland. I finally looked out of the window and saw the farmer on his tractor preparing the land for planting. I went back to bed and slept like a baby with the exact same noise, and found it actually was soothing.

Yes wind chimes. Who would want those things.

Stereo base. It's quiet at my apartment. When I owned that lousy house any summer holiday the jerk behind me put his stereo outside and blasted it from 10-10. I'm so glad I don't have to listen to that now.

Screaming kids are not a favorite. Luckily there are few kids here. My mother was ultra sensitive to all noises and drove us crazy about it.

The people across the street play loud rap music on occasion. They also like to come home at 3 a.m. with their car radios blaring and I do mean blaring. Arrrgghhhh.

The houses on either side of us have been vacant for 2-3 years. One just sold and is being flipped. The other one will be for sale within the next few months. The people who used to live in the nearest house....only about eight feet from our bedroom wall used to play loud music late into the night. We couldn't hear the music itself but the bass....oh, the bass....thump, thump, thump.

I have nightmares about who might be moving in. Maybe we'll luck out and they'll be old farts like us and play music quietly. Maybe they won't have dogs that bark incessantly.

Maybe we'll win the lottery and be able to move to the country.

High-pitched voices of little kids having temper tantrums in public places. But, I have a solution, I take out my hearing aids and then I'm deaf as a post! :D Fortunately, we live in a senior mobile home park so we seldom see kids in the park and they are on their best behavior at grandma's house.

The moron who pulls up next to you at a light with all his windows open and the radio as loud as it will go. I would like to paper his car with hearing aid ads, he will need them.

The mutt next door that never shuts up.

In the 1970s we had an idiot kid across the street that had a punching bag in his car port, bang bang bang for hours at a time.

I've lived in the City all of my life and there has always been noise outside. Now however a newly married couple moved into the house next door to me. They are always yelling and screaming at one another. They have a dog that barks constantly. It all starts at 4am. Then after they go to work about 9am the dog barks until they come home around 6pm and then the yelling starts and goes on all night until at least 1am. And they play loud music constantly. I can hear them in every room in my house.

People round here who don't turn off their car engines when they stop. It happens all the time here, especially with petrolheads who fit special noisy exhausts. They stop, leave the engine running and sometimes it's 30 mins before they return - just enough time for a hole to open in the Ozone layer.

Around here, that would get your car stolen!! One of the things the cops are imploring people not to do here is go out in the morning and start your car and leave it running to warm up -- lots of cars get stolen that way.

Here we have the Amber Alert thing that suddenly screeches out from your cell phone, at any hour of the day or night, top volume, and continues to do it until you find your phone and turn it off! GRRR! I mean I get the point and all, but it can make you crazy at 4:00 AM when you wake up from a dead sleep to this godawful sound.

We have that problem in my area during the coldest days of the winter. People start cars to let them warm up and when they come out of the house the car is gone.

We've also had some toddlers stolen along with the cars when parents stop at a corner store and leave the car running while they dash into the store.

All of the noises mentioned annoy me. I would like to add firecrackers that are lit up in the middle of the night (and it is not 4th of July) that sound like gunshots. I also hate to hear a person loudly snapping their chewing gum. I live in a condo and have a neighbor who ALWAYS slams the entry door. In the middle of the night it is actually scary when it wakes me up.

Those car horns that somehow start beeping in a parked car and don't stop until someone comes and turns them off. I know they're supposed to be an anti-theft device, but I wonder how often that beeping is actually caused by an attempted theft. Probably almost never.

I like the thought of taking out the hearing aids to block out the noise!!
