Old fashioned or Odd names you don't hear much anymore

I'm shocked when I hear some other woman, besides me, has the name Elsie. Who in the world would name their child Elsie...it's so boring. lol

I spelled my youngest daughter's name, (Coleen), because the usual spelling, Colleen, made me think of Collie dogs because of how it is pronounced. Turns out many people do not know whether to pronounce her name, Co-leen, or Colleen. lol

Trying to figure out how to pronounce a name with odd spelling is maddening.

I was going to say ... show me any celebrity with kids, and I'll show you a bizarre name, but this week George and Amal Clooney had their twins, and named them Alexander and Ella.... such very normal names.
How strange is that? :)

My dad had a sister named Maude but she died in childhood.

You are right JaniceM,not too many kids being named the names we grew up with-David,Mary etc. Our son is a Jr. but I would never do that again-too confusing. I always have to clarify which Wes I am talking about. As a kid,we called him Wesley mostly, but he`s 37 now so we call him Wes,same as his dad.

I had a friend years ago whose family figured out how to eliminate the confusion- her grandfather, father, and brother were all named Robert, and called Bob; within their family they were known as
Big Bob, Little Bob, and Tiny Bob. I thought it was hilarious, because "Tiny Bob" was a middle-aged man, married with children. :)

That one isn't too unusual. Names I've seen: Shannan, Shannen, Danial, Justen, Jacen, and by far the weirdest: ShyAnn (I think they were aiming for 'Cheyenne').

My family was a little odd. Both my Grandmothers were named Concetta, and so were 2 of my Aunts on both sides of the family. The same was true of my Aunt Rita's and my Aunt Helen. As far as the men go including my Dad there were many Frank's on both sides and Salvatore's. When my Mother had my sister she named her Charlotte and shortly after that my Dad's sister named her daughter Charlotte. Lucky for me my parents hadn't pick out a name for me because of a difficult pregnancy. So when I was born and everything was ok with me they asked the nurse her name. She told them her name was Barbara Ann and that's how I got my name. Thankfully she didn't have a crazy name because I would had gotten stuck with it for my whole life.

I have a cousin named Eugenia and she isn't a senior citizen yet. And I had an older cousin named Ida; also the best friend of my cousin Eugenia's mother was named Ida. Never heard the name Crescence...it's different, pretty.

Some of our older family names: Elmer, Edna, Orval, Orpha, Cowetta, Sylba, Ethel, Harvey, Ernest, Clyde. That's all I can think of right now. And of course, there is always me, Iodine. :playful:

My mom's name is Judy and my dad's name is Ray. My grandmother's names were Betty and Myrtle. My grandfather's names were Doy and Frank, and I have a friend named Paula.

My ex's paternal great-grandparents were Daisy and Garnet. I like both those names and think they should make a comeback.

Was recently talking about hearing the old ones coming back. My Grands didn't know the names were old and really liked them. There's Aline, Donia, Lorina, Ethel, Blanney, Claiborne, Claude, Eunick, Marvin.

My great-grandparents were so grateful that they found a state that let them get married (albeit illegally....long story) that they named their first child, a daughter, after it.

Then they had a boat-load of boys who they named after the tribes of Israel (theory is that was because their marriage certificate issued by a sympathetic Methodist minister listed great-grandma as a "Hebrew Spinster" instead of what she really was, a mixture of white, Cherokee and Black.) By the time they got to my grandfather, they named him after the man who was in the White House at that time and then ended up with a couple of Confederate generals. Whew.
