I can think of a few tied for 2nd place, but in my view Howard Hughes (1905-1976) was the most fascinating man in 20th Century America.

No one caused more interest from the public or the press than did Hughes. Probably the wealthiest man of his day, he was king in the fields of movie production (RKO), real estate, aeronautics, and medical endowment.

But it was his extreme eccentricity that captivated the public.

Who is your choice?

I'm sure I'll think of other contenders but Paul Robeson is the first person who came to mind. His voice was magnificent. This from Wikipedia:
"Paul Leroy Robeson (/ˈroʊbsən/ ROHB-sən;[3][4] April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was an American bass-baritone concert artist, actor, professional football player, and activist who became famous both for his cultural accomplishments and for his political stances."

I have given this a lot of thought since you posted this and I am going to choose Dwight Eisenhower. Not only for his work as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe but also for his time as President. I was not around during those times but the more I learned about him as I got older, the more I admired the way he handled being in the leadership role.
