Our version of retirement: Living a childhood dream

bigger is better, but not necessarily best

I would love to find a bold feature for all incoming stuff, emails, forums...everything

I'm going to get with some techies that can advise what's available
I would suggest using large print, when posting to Gary...or at least #22 font size. As we get older, large print becomes our friend!

What do birds do when they get old?
96e6ae061c0cec2f37db3e05984fcf34.jpg

"As birds age, their abilities and behaviors change. Older birds experience physical declines that affect their flight, foraging, and reproductive capabilities. They also demonstrate changes in social behaviors and patterns of movement."

"However, aging birds utilize various strategies to cope with these challenges. Their advanced age provides benefits as well, such as increased foraging expertise. Understanding how birds adapt to aging can provide insights into their impressive longevity."

Vision

"Many avian species experience vision loss as they age, particularly raptors. Conditions such as cataracts and corneal infections may develop. Aging birds sometimes show clouding or discoloration of the lenses and corneas in one or both eyes. These issues reduce visual acuity and depth perception."

"With impaired vision, older birds find it more difficult to spot food sources and recognize predators, mates, and rivals. To adapt, aging raptors choose easier-to-see prey like large mammals instead of small, fast songbirds. Eagles and hawks switch to hunting at closer ranges. Aged birds may also become more reliant on their mate or flockmates to act as extra eyes."

Hey Gary
Very sorry to hear about the eyes, txt to speech A lot of computers have that option to one point or another, if not an app I am sure will do what you need it to do. I expect with things like alexa that you will find something to fit your situation. Voice control has been around a long time.
Like you , I have been guided to be here, I know beyond any doubt this is where I was meant to to be.
take care
Gil

Stopped at the local techie shop

The kid fiddled with some versions of different contrast and brightness settings with their apps

Not to my satisfaction

He strongly suggested a large monitor
mentioning his poor sighted customers were happy with them

He demo'd their 27" one

Too big for where I park, but convinced a larger monitor would help, I ordered a 24" Samsung

I could have bought one at Wally World, but like to tie my purchases with whoever services I use

$140
Not bad

I'll pick it up next week

I'm gonna attempt to post pics of the garden as it is today.
The fruits and veggies are coming on late, so just hope Sept is warm enough to ripen most things

Some plants are still in the bud, and it;s mid August....not good

My prob is inability to comment on each pic as I can no longer see them, once posted.

There's quite a few, so will prolly need to do more than one post

Here goes

We'll see what the yield is

Might be having a lot of fried green tomatoes

This time last year, the limbs of the plum trees were breaking form the load

This year there is very few fruit, and what's there is just now turning color

Good thing
The freezer and pantry shelves are still full from last year
We could use more fruit leather, and that's prolly what we'll do with this year's yield, after picking and eating to our fill

The locals are all commenting on the poor results of this season
The hard fast rule here of not planting until June 15 were out the window with the late freezes

Hope Sept is a warm one

Right now, we are just eating the greens and a few yellow crook necked

Hoping for the egg plants to mature (love them so)

Can you extend the season a bit with a plastic covering or some old tarps, blankets, etc…

I tried pulling up tomato vines and hanging them in an unheated garage but that really wasn’t worth the effort.
did the tarps early on
It's a help for sure

Decades ago we hung the tomato vines, and ended up with just as many green ones

We'll prolly trim the vines down to yield more sun light and direct the nutrient to the fruit

We planted too close together at the onset, thinking we'd thin them out.....but never did

Worse case
lotsa greens and onions

How high does the fence need to be to keep the deer out?
The fence is 6' high

Four years ago, when we bought the place, I wondered if 6' was enough
They have yet to try
Came close one 4th of July
Fireworks were going off
The town deer were running in a panic
Six or eight ran by the fence
One little buck stopped and considered
then caught up with the others, headed for their cemetery sanctuary
Typically, if they can see thru the fence, or to the other side, they spring right over

I know these black tails can do it
but looks like these town deer don't know

Prolly too many easier grazings around town

They are this town's sacred cows

If they ever did jump the fence, we'd be having some backstrap for supper, if my lady had a silencer

She loves her garden.....and deer meat

Took a lousy pic of a little forked horn, tonguing out the feeders

It was late morn
They usually wait 'til dusk this time of year

deer.jpg

I wonder how the muleys up at the cabin would handle that fence
