Out on the "Limb", Maybe:

The gaming (gambling) industry employs workers who pose as "players", sitting at, or standing by, Blackjack tables, Roulette Wheels, Craps Tables, and the like. Their purpose is to "generate" bystander interest in the game they are playing, "draw" them in, so to speak. It's a dog-eat-dog industry, no doubt, and any form of "advertising" which works is likely permitted. Such "house" employs are known as "SHILLS". I detected them many years ago, after reading Edward O. Thorpe's account of Blackjack playing in Nevada. Downtown Vegas one night, I saw obvious unveiled signs, illegal, but who cared, where the dealer extended stacks of chips to a player, who did not buy them, paid off losing hands, and such other moves that could not be denied.

Having known that for 40+ years now, and here I'm REALLY going out on a limb:

Would Talk Forums employ shills?

Think about it. See what could be gained from "outsider" information? Better control of the forum, it's flow, it's indiscretions, more member info, etc.

Now, the Management knows that, given a sudden post inflicted, depending on time of day (more or less), many hundreds, or even thousands of individuals might get to see a "disparaging post" before they can eliminate it. This I see as one of the more difficult positions placed on the "Admin's Plate". To get rid, or allow. That is the question.

Now, I meant to do no harm in posting this. A general question pertaining to absolute generalities. If my tenure here is valued to some certain degree, Admin will understand. Or, even as you read this, I may disappear. These are questions which are of importance to an "Imp".

My grandfather was a shill for local carnivals - he'd be the guy who won the games and thereby urged others to play.

As a writer I've often continued in his footsteps for various publications and websites.

I read somewhere that the casinos distrust their dealers and floor people more so than the customers.

Can't answer for shills, but I do know they use 'mechanics', 'coolers', frequently change decks and dealers (bringing in a cold one to break the luck). It's funny but the casino operates everything on a mathmatical percentage basis and not luck. And yet the 'pit bosses' in the sky will try anything to cool the play of a hot table.

While playing at a 21 table in N Nevada I was watching 2 players (1 on 1st the other on 3rd) having a hot streak. They weren't counters or cheating in any way I could see but they both were up 2-3 thousand. I observed 2 young blonde haired girls dressed in short cutoff jeans and skimpy tops approach the table. They had made a beeline directly to our table. I was in the center and they seperated and each sat next to one of the winners. It was obvious that they were employed by the casino and within 30 minutes or so of nuzzling with the players they had them playing their last chips. Both players went bust and the girls excused themselves and walked away never to return. After the players left I turned to the dealer and remarked, 'That was quite a show'.

Shill? My new word for the day - now I only have to work it into conversation somewhere, that is if I haven't forgotten it by the time I get off the computer.

I liken a shill to a magician's confederate. :)

REAL magicians don't USE confederates!

The only ones who do are the ones who use neon red thread for their "invisible" effects and think spending $100 at the magic store and immediately showing the effect to an audience is "real magic" ...

Sorry ... former magician ...

A prestidigitator! Sorry, I had no idea..............

You, of course, would certainly not have employed a confederate! imp
