OVERRATED professions

Here is m y list of them. Obviously, exceptions will exist, so this is a generalization only.
Feel free to disagree or add your own.


COWBOYS--they have a romantic American allure but the job was very grimy, low paying, hardworking and very boring herding cows. Nothing like
Rawhide television show.

PSYCHOTHERAPISTS-- therapy is neither a science nor an art and it cannot be studied from a book. Some therapists will do more harm
than good and they make a good living with high prices. Are they worth 2-3 dollars a minute? Some clients will get better without one. Many of them
have shallow minds and use no techniques or specific methods to help their clients. They say little because they have nothing to say.

RAP performers. Music should have rythmn, melody and/or a definite beat. If it doesn't then it isn't music. Reading poetry very fast and loud
is not music. They may be saying interesting things, I don't know.


TALK show interviewers on television, radio, web. It does not take much talent to ask interesting questions and get responses from individuals who
are eager to talk. I could do this easily, only I would ask hard followup questions. Charlie Rose on Public TV is overrated.

BIG CHEFS especially on television.Creating great delicious meals does not deserve national attention and reputation. It is consumed quickly then repeated again and again over and over.

Sports figures in general-A "real" job like say police officer or teacher are really poorly paid professions considering how important the job is. Some sports people make ridiculous amounts of money.
 

Disagree with psychotherapists.

As in any other profession there are good and bad ones. When you see a life saved because of your therapy, you KNOW your profession is worthwhile.

Other than that ...

ALL professional sports figures.

Martial arts instructors. :eek:
 
Psychotherapists, not sure if this is relative or not, but I have noticed from the many hearings and trials that I have been called to testify in that these people are tough to figure out. The state when presenting their case will have a psychologist or psychiatrist testify by being in the state's corner. When the defense calls their professionals to the stand, they will counter the state's witnesses by testifying the opposite. So, the issue for the jury is who (whom) do you go or agree with?

In some cases, I have come to the conclusion that some will say whatever you want them to say just to collect their fee, which for them going to a hearing, discovery or trial is very expensive. Not sure about depositions.
 
I don't like generalizing people. And cowboys??? Come on! :( I bet you've never been kissed by a handsome cowboy!

I have nothing against rap as long as they don't say the F word, bitches, the N word or talk about disgusting things. I don't care for it but I don't think everyone in the world has to share my taste in entertainment.

PSYCHOTHERAPISTS, are like most people, some good and some bad. Why toss them all in the same pot of soup?

Talk shows are usually for entertainment. I haven't been into them since the Mike Douglas and Merv Griffith days. Some people must like them or they wouldn't be on TV.

Big Chefs are great. I love cooking shows and sort of use the cooking channel as a default on my TV if I want some noise in the house and not in the mood for music. I know lots of people who have gotten inspired to cook from watching these shows.

I'm curious Victor what sort of work you did for a living. I realize that's a privet question so I won't ask it. I worked for the county in The Department of Pubic Social Services. My husband was a self employed carpenter/cabinetmaker/construction worker till the last 15 years before he retired and then he worked all over the US running crews that did remodeling or installing fixtures in high end stores.

 
Psychotherapists overrrated really? I have always worked in the trenches, often with those no one else would help. Rich? Not likely, these individuals,weRe poor, often indigent. As for psychotherapy neither being an art or science, or amenable to book learning,I

disagree. While much is still unknown about the human brain on many levels, there have been great strides. I spent many years at university learning everything I could. As a clinical psychologist. I have a considerable

eexperience with a variety of disfunctional sometimes aberrant behaviours. I also scored in the ninety percentile in nurturing/intuitive/empathy studies. I have masters in counseling, and a PHD in psychotherapy,finally paid for.I believe the greatest expertise I can offer my clients is my

compassion. Now, I work primarily with those who have PTSD. Most are vets, though presently, I am working pro bono with Syrian refugees, particularly children who suffer severe trauma/PTSD. Among my colleagues, I have been told that my own

experience with childhood trauma, followed by my own battles with PTSD, have given me considerable validity In what I have to say. There are specific Methods and techniques used by all reputable psychotherapists both to help and understand their clients

wherever possible. Some times we fail, in my work with vets with very severe PTSD, sometimes they commit suicide. Most do not, and go on to lead productive healthier lives. But for the help of professionals, I would be dead. Incompetent

psychotherapists are the exception rather than the rule. As I recall, Victor, this is the second thread where you have trashed


My profession/vocation. If you have personal experience of bad therapists I am sorry, but it is hardly fair to hold the rest of us accountable for some inferior professionals. Also, unless one has put in years of time toiling away in university, studying

the mental,health field I question their credibility in this matter. My supposedly shallow mind I s reeling from the two hours I spent early this morning trying to comfort a four year old girl caught in the throes of terrible flashbacks concerning the

bombing of her house, and subsequent loss of eight of her family, six of them under the age of,twelve. Somehow, I don't think her mother who kissed my hands after her daughter fell asleep in my arms, tightly clutching my long hair, (ouch) thinks my

Profession overrated. Neither do vets, when one of us sit in the pit with them, while they break down and weep in our arms, thus beginning the first steps to lighting a candle in the dark, and finding a way out of hell. Most,of us do this not for money, or
prestige, but out of love and compassion. For most of us it is a vocation. The attrition rate among us is as high first responders.
 
Physiotherapists got my wife walking again after two strokes, got her dancing after the first. Took them eight months dedicated in patient work and eighteen months outpatient after the first, and six months and three years after the second.

Overrated? Not in this house.

Non jobs - Kardashians and whatsername Paris Hilton types who do nothing except stand around puckering and posing - and they get paid for it.

Manatee, SOME of them are overpaid but some don't make that much $ and the same can be said for a lot of the writers. BUT, I see no reason to call them wackos. Some of them are very nice family people.

Many college profs are annoying, especially if they reschedule the final exam for a week earlier. :eek: Profs with advanced degrees in ED are very annoying...

A physiotherapist is different than a psychotherapist. Physiotherapists work in rehabilitating the body, whereas psychotherapists work with the mind.

I said that these are only broad generalizations. Shalimar, you sound like a very fine therapist. I have known several psychologists and psych professors
as colleagues and from experience and I was not at all impressed with them. I am not saying that all therapists are shallow/.of course that is wrong and a bad
generalization. I do not mean to "trash" them. But many therapists say little or nothing to their adult clients and even I know better questions to ask than they do.
Also, I was reading some posts on a psych forum and many clients or patients were unhappy or frustrated with their therapists. As with all professions. some members
are excellent and hardworking and deserve praise and others hardly work, coast along or are burnt out, etc. Sorry if I offended you.
With rap performers, some ar excellent at what they do (I like their funny names) but it is not music by any definition I know.
Want me to name some underrated professions?
 
Counselors are like humans ;) , and as such come in different forms and personalities. Talking with a Counselors is like talking with a friend that has useful knowledge and training. But, if a person doesn't have a friend bond with a particular counselor, then perhaps it's necessary to move on, no harm-no foul. Same thing with medical professionals, a good rapport is a huge plus.
It took me some time to get connected with a primary care physician, but for several years now I've had one that I respect, and he respects me as well. Communication works best when it flows both directions.
