O.K. I finally had to look it up, because I didn't know where the "OZ" was that you guys are always referring to.
It obviously had nothing to do with Judy Garland or the "Tin Man".
So I find out it means "Australia" or "Ounce". Fine. I was just going to say how do you make the connection between those things and "OZ" when a light bulb went off. So now I get that "Oz." is the abbreviation for "ounce". I only need to know how "ounce" became synonymous with "Australia".
This sounds like one for Warrigal, but can any of you Aussies give me a clue? :shrug:
 

I thought it was called Oz because it's an upside-down world, just like Judy's Oz was. ..

Or maybe because it's filled with violent felons, like the HBO "Oz" series ... :playful:
 
The abbreviation for Australia is Aus, pronounced OZ.

The nickname Ozzie generally means that the person is an Australian.

I use upper case OZ to mean Australia and lower case, oz., for the (now obsolete) weight of ounces.
 
I find Australian men terribly irresistible. Something about their mannerisms. That's why I was born in America to prevent me from being a big ol naughty person.

P.S. - I only noticed Warrigal being from Australia. Anyone else please disregard that comment :p
 
Well I guess I've got enough to go on. We still use oz. here in the US and it will still be Awstralia when I think of it in my head, but thank you all very much. At least I know what you are talking about now. No Paul Hogan, BW?

My sister lives in the town next to Melbourne Florida. They say "Mel-burn".
 
How do OZ people pronounce Melbourne?

I'm binge watching "Rake" on Netflix right now -- it's set in Australia and is an Australian TV series. I'll have to pay attention to how they say it -- I haven't noticed references to Melbourne yet, but they talk about Adelaide a good bit.
