Perspective on US and homicide

IQ is genetic. It is genetic in East Asians and Ashkenazi Jews, as well as all of humanity and frequently manifests itself in skull volume, just as genetic athletic abilities are gifted on some more than others. No doubt a product of evolution in a variety of environments.

I suggest we leave it here, lest this discussion degenerate into politics versus an unpleasant truth, which is the way it’s headed.
You're making some interesting points, though, El C. And I thought of one last night: one of the flaws in that study you linked is that it doesn't specify the types of crimes of the criminals they tested, other than that the crimes were "violent." And that could include somebody who punched someone in the face, or had a gun or knife on him at the time of commission.

Several decades ago, the FBI did a study among incarcerated criminals that showed criminals with "lower intelligence" - i.e., who dropped out of school early and/or attended sporadically - they tended to committed crimes such as assault and battery, robbery, burglary, shoplifting, and car theft, while most criminals of "higher intelligence" tended to commit "sophisticated" bank robberies and serial murders.

They also created 2 categories of crime as a result of this study; Organized crimes and Disorganized crimes. Criminals with "lower intelligence" fit in the Disorganized category, and criminals with "higher intelligence" fit the Organized category.

(I can't find this study, but it was mentioned several times in a documentary I watched on Netflix)

Everything is political these days... even a pandemic!

My account was suspended for a week because I criticized a cable news program. They told me it was because of politics but I didn't say anything whatsoever about politics. It was more cultural issues that I was talking about. But cultural issues are political, I guess.
Politics isn’t allowed but there’s plenty of threads that are political. Maybe it just depends who it is. 🤔 I honestly don’t know how political issues are judged.

We've had a lengthy thread on Socialism that didn't appear to present a problem, but I suspect that the use of names of politicians or political parties would have crossed the line. My introduction to a discussion forum such as this was in a UseNet news group supposedly devoted to retirement issues. I tuned in because I was about to retire and wanted to learn more about the retirement years, but soon discovered that the group had been devoured by politics. I don't doubt that the same would happen here if the management permitted it. Fortunately it does not.

Very true. I’m not personally complaining about it. I think it would be very difficult trying to moderate a forum with the membership here especially with everything going on in our world today. The forum certainly gives plenty of leeway for members to discuss many topics that border on being political and it probably is difficult knowing where to draw the line.

I personally don’t watch the news at all since I don’t like politics, yet at times I find myself jumping into threads which are and get myself agitated in doing so.

I’m glad this forum has the no politics rule. I’ve been on forums that allow politics and they are like battle grounds. I’ll happily pass on all that. Besides which, I don’t handle debates and conflict well.

We've discussed this before and on occasion @Matrix has chimed in. The rule is not and cannot be strictly enforced, it would eliminate a lot of the discussions we have. I know partisan politics is out, but otherwise it has to be a subjective judgement. I don't always agree however, I think Matrix does a pretty good job, all things considered. His real objective is to keep things civil, and he has managed to mostly do that.

I am sure there is something to what @SeniorBen says, reporting it increases the chances of a post or thread being labeled political.

The best I can say is try to do what you see others doing and maintain civility. With time you will get a better understanding of what is and isn't allowed. I think Matrix always warns people before banning them. I've been warned a time or two, but never banned. Most bans are short term.

I wish we could be a little more political, but it ain't my forum and it does seem to work the way its done.

Wikipedia defines it:

Politics is the way that people living in groups make decisions. Politics is about making agreements between people so that they can live together in groups such as tribes, cities, or countries. https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics

Pretty broad...

I think more and more, forums such as SFs will be assisted by AI to moderate the forums. I know there are some plugins available that can detect vulgarities and things like that. AI theoretically could detect political content and personal attacks. I'm not sure if that's available yet. Actually, I don't know if that's available. Why did I write "I'm not sure."? :ROFLMAO:

I don't think so, but when you are the one being caught it can feel that way...
I’ve actually been here for 5 years last March.
Yes it DOES feel like that when you are the one being caught. Like SeniorBen, I was banned for stating that it looked like a Rambo movie when a member had posted a picture of his gun collection. I’d never seen so many guns except in action movies with violence. It wasn’t intended to offend.

Since this is an American site and most members are American, it CAN also feel like Mob Mentality when you speak your views about how you feel about guns and gun violence . if you go against the grain and I don’t really think it matters how you express that difference of opinion, you become ostracized.

Yesterday was a very strange day. I got an unexpected email from someone I hadn’t heard from in ages asking me if I was this member. Things have drastically changed since then. A whole sequence of negative events occurred spontaneously after that.
Do I think this is mere coincidence?
Not a chance.

YES Alligator Bob! It CAN ‘feel’ like that.

Yes, he always carried a gun.
I won’t go into the whole story, but he was going to kill those 3 guys one way or another. If you knew the reason behind all this, you would understand better as to why why he wanted these men dead, but I won’t go into all of it. We (the family) had no idea that our brother or son was involved with the people he was. My brother didn’t hold down a job, but always had a wad of cash on him.
This is the last statement I’m making about this horrible story. These 3 guys were guys of ill repute. If I tokd you our last name, you could look us up on the Internet. My mom was totally against my dad changing the family name until the internet came along and now everyone can find out anything about anyone, so my dad did finally change our family name for the sake of privacy. Enough said.

My brother was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease last year. He gets transported twice weekly to a hospital nearby for treatment, but that’s going to end right after the beginning of the new year. The prison is getting their own special machine needed, so there will be no more need to go to the hospital. Our great grandfather had this disease years ago. We thought it had reached its end, but I guess not. He has a lot of problems swallowing food and chokes a lot. His memory is almost gone.
