Physical therapy FAIL! I'm so disappointed 😕

I've canceled the rest of my physical therapy. It's just making me worse. I'm so disappointed 😭
It’s perfectly normal to feel worse after the first few treatments. They should have told you that. All your muscles and ligaments are gradually being pulled in the right way which cause strain at first. It takes your body time to adjust. That’s why many people taking physiotherapy also take massage therapy at the same time.

History of my shoulder problem in a nutshell:

After 2 years (while still working) I had pain in my shoulder, went to doctor and took medical leave from work. Intensive physical therapy ensued. I improved enough to return to work briefly before my planned retirement at age 65. Gradually it got worse, fast forward to 2 and a half years later. I am struggling to drive because of this. The physical therapy is just making me worse. It's making a grinding sensation and sound when I attempt all the exercises and at other times also.
I will call my ortho doc who referred me to physical therapy next week.
Just needed to vent I guess. I really thought it would work well like it did last time. 😥

They advised me if it causes pain to NOT continue. They did not do massage although they mentioned it was included. I really don't think the problem is their services, I think the treatment isn't right for my condition. Thank you however for your input.

I thought some pain was to be expected at first. I'm sorry your session didn't go as you would like Goddess. I wish you healing and relief from pain.

I hope time will help you heal. Must be such a let down that therapy is not working.
At this point I'd probably consult youtube. I know, I know, but sometimes you pick up something the Drs. didn't.

I know what you mean. I went to a doc/clinic mostly for back pain neuropathy imbalance etc. $2000 p/month, I went three times p/week, for 2 months .... it did nothing for me at all. Never felt even just the slightest improvement , I didn't pay for the third month, They asked me why .... I said after two full months, I should at the very least feel some improvement , something. Of course their answer was the treatment was designed as a three month program. I said well, OK, fine but if Two months and now $4000 has had no effect .... I cannot believe that one more month & another $2000 will.

The success or failure of physical therapy can depend on the individual’s case, the nature or severity of it, and even their psychological orientation. I over-exercised ( I was addicted to it, really), and wound up in PT, which did work for me, but I worked hard at it, transferring my exercise addiction and compulsiveness to the therapy. I practically tore one of their machines apart!

My significant other was also recommended for PT, but found it painful and too much like work. Her insurance also wouldn’t pay for it. She didn’t continue beyond an initial session, and wound up deteriorating to the point of losing mobility.

Different people, different problems, different orientations and outcomes. Your experience may vary, as they say…

PT is tricky and you need a therapist that knows what they are doing and pays attention.

I had PT in their office and not unusual to handle multiple patients at once. Mine p therapist was hard but a lot of the exercises and stretches they were constantly checking/feeling what was going on with the tendons, ligaments, muscles involved etc. I still use their routine to this day( a shorter version)

A lot of trainers are clock punchers or from a different era. Over the last 10-20 years there's been a big push to get them on par with a doctor education wise. It's not just getting a physical trainer certification.

Also my doctor emphasized flexibility first. I asked how come I wasn't getting many strength exercises and he flexibility gets priorty. Some are extremely tight or never any kind a stretching and just used their body as-is.

The shoulder is a complex joint. I know people forced to do several rounds of pt before they had shoulder surgery, not to avoid it but prepare for surgery and post op. With shoulders never worry about weight, speed etc. Every exercise should be done with perfect form. Don't push. Shoulder is too delicate for no pain on gain crap.

This started in May and getting progressively worse. In an attempt to get healthy in a couple ways, I've just been getting worse. I don't know what's going on but I'm not feeling much better. It seems like I can't tolerate warmer weather. I'm just getting weak. Medicine isn't helping much.
I did 3 sessions of physical therapy none of which made me better, they only made me worse. I told them so too. At that point I gave up. Back to square one but my tolerance to the warmer weather is just making me ill.
I guess I can only wait and hope for summer to end or for the medicine to miraculously start working
🙁

I get sapped by high humidity. I hope you get back to it as fast as is comfortable for you. It could keep you independent.

Do you think if you wait until the warmer weather is over that you would be able to do PT? You'd only have to concentrate on one thing at a time then.

I took PT for my bicep/upper arm last fall & it didn't feel that much better at the time. After all of the treatments (4 weeks) was done, I continued at home the exercises that did make it feel better & did more day to day activity movement & very slowly it has gotten better, but not 100%.

Update:
Since discontinuing physical therapy I have gone back to square one, so the irritation from physical therapy is no longer bothering me. Saw doctor today and he said try to rest it and if it should continue to bother me he can give me an injection 💉
THANKS everyone for your input!

I don't know your situation in specific, but oftentimes an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon will refer a patient for physical therapy, being pretty certain the therapy will not be successful, but for the reason that most all insurance companies --and probably Medicare-- require a certain amount of "conservative" treatment first to see if that will resolve the problem. Then if it's not successful, they will authorize surgery. The whole issue is cost.
