Police arrest Deputy who did nothing to mitigate Parkland School shooting

I'll put myself in my own shoes as someone who has grandkids in school. And I sure as Hell don't want a cop whose priorities are as you just described charged with protecting them. I want the guy in post #17.

OK, stay in your shoes....shots ring out, you do not know for sure from where, or....from how many weapons.

But you want to see your grand-kids again....How fast do you rush in?

The guy in post #17, was for sure brave....no question but.....he [looks] much younger. With age comes caution...........that's why they used to draft kids.

I'm not sure how I would react in such a situation. Therefore I would not take the job. When I was in school back in the day we didn't have armed police in our schools. The reason we have them now is because of the threat of school shootings. So I would say that any police officer that takes such a job needs to be mentally prepared for such an occurrence. It is not a position that someone looking for a place to coast till retirement, also known as ROTJ (Retired On The Job) should be taking.

Kinda quick to judge aren't you? [coast to retirement]

If you don't know how you would react in that situation? {by your own words}....how is it your place to judge how he should have?

You & I do not know his training, [remember, he's old school] {remember when HE took the ***** these things did not happen......we do not know his experiences, etc. We only know what the news media has told us. And the news media lately seems to have a very negative opinion about the police. Everything is their fault.....never the fault of the criminal thug, or seemingly crazy person.

Again, how long was it before back-up arrived?

I'm smart enough to know that I'm not right for the job. I'm the guy who enlisted in the Air Force for 4 years during the Vietnam war rather than take a chance of being drafted into the infantry. Training? I would say that any cop who takes a job as a school resource officer had damned well better know what to do when somebody starts shooting up the school. As for back up, do you really think an armed police officer should wait for back up when kids are being shot execution style? I hope to Hell that isn't official police protocall.

"As for back up, do you really think an armed police officer should wait for back up"

As per several who have been on talk radio....for years they were taught to wait for back up in [all] situations. Again , remember this officer was not young, as such his training / experience goes back. These same officers also note that training has changed/is changing.

"I would say that any cop who takes a job as a school resource officer had damned well better know what to do when somebody starts shooting up the school."

Easy to say when you have never been & will never be in such a situation.

A possible 96 years in prison, for a moment of indecision, a hesitation .........WoW!......I only wish we would be so stern with criminals.....the ones that actually plan/intend to do us harm.

You keep harping on Peterson's age as if that gives him some excuse for his inaction. I have to say rpg you've given me an entirely new perspective on age discrimination. Maybe it's not such a bad idea to start forcing these tired old lifers like your boy Peterson into early retirement to make way for some younger people that are eager to do the job.

Former school resource officer Scot Peterson was widely criticized after he failed to confront a shooter who opened fire and killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last year. The Broward Sheriff's Office active shooter policy calls for deputies to interrupt a shooting and search for victims when there's a ceasefire.

More than a year after the massacre, the former Broward County sheriff's deputy now faces child neglect, culpable negligence and perjury charges.

Peterson's attorney, Joseph A. DiRuzzo III, said the charges appear to be "a thinly veiled attempt at politically motivated retribution against Mr. Peterson." He said Peterson cannot be prosecuted as a caregiver since he was acting as a law enforcement officer in an official capacity.
Here's what we know about Peterson's response to the shooting.

He was armed but never went inside the building

When shots rang out at the Parkland school, Peterson didn't run toward the gunfire.
Senior Brandon Huff claimed he saw Peterson standing outside behind a stairwell wall with his gun drawn "just pointing it at the building."

"He's wearing a bulletproof vest ... while school security guards, coaches pretty much, were running in shielding kids," he said.

Footage from the school surveillance cameras showed Peterson positioned outside of the school.

Last year, authorities released an edited 27-minute video with portions of surveillance video from that day.

The video begins with Peterson, wearing his deputy's uniform, standing between two buildings on campus talking to another adult, then appearing to speak into a radio handset on his shoulder.

He walks off screen, but a few minutes later, Peterson appears from another angle positioned outside a building. Students, whose images are pixelated, walk into the frame and then out of it.
In past interviews,DiRuzzo said Peterson believed the gunshots were coming from outside the building.

He hid for more than 45 minutes

Peterson arrived at the 1200 building -- where the massacre took place -- and then moved 75 feet to a "position of increased personal safety" near the 700 and 800 buildings, an arrest warrant affidavit said.

The warrant says Peterson stayed there for more than 45 minutes.
During that time, the gunman killed five students and one teacher, authorities said.

While he was outside the building, Peterson got on his radio and took a position where he could see the western entry, Former Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel had said.

Though his attorney said Peterson wasn't sure where the shots were coming from, he can be heard in dispatch audio released last year saying, "I think we have shots fired, possible shots fired, 1200 building."

Immediately after the shooting, responding officers scrambled to the scene but appeared to be following commands from Peterson to close the road in front of the school and set up a perimeter.

He was widely criticized by officials

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Peterson was publicly shamed by then-Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel as well as President Donald Trump.Trump called him a coward and criticized him on several occasions.

"When it came time to get in there and do something, he didn't have the courage or something happened, but he certainly did a poor job. There's no question about that," Trump said of Peterson on the White House South Lawn, days after the shooting.

Can you honestly say you think the same as you did when you were young?

Do you really think you are as brave as you might have once been?

Do you not embrace life more than in your youth?

Again, just how quickly would you chance never seeing your grandchildren again?

I am not making excuses for officer Peterson...But I can surely imagine that many things / thoughts went through his mind at that moment. And could well be part of the cause for his hesitation.

Think about this....

The new police code, that they take oath to, that you seem to think they should.

I solemnly swear to lay my life on the line for any citizen at any time.....place myself in harms way with no regard for my own safety , knowing that if I do not. I can & will be arrested, charged, prosecuted & face 96 years in prison for my decision/hesitation/inaction.

Just how many young guys do you think will sign on for that?

They carry the gun to protect themselves first....then us.

You and I have nothing in common dude. And I'm thankful for that.

I know one thing. If I was in Peterson's shoes, knowing that I had been a coward while 17 kids got killed, I would not be able to look myself in the mirror. I sure wouldn't want to face my kids and grandkids as the coward who let 17 kids die on my watch. I think the only honorable thing for Peterson to do now is the take out his service weapon, cock it, place the barrel in his mouth, and pull the trigger.

It is very easy to judge / criticize after the fact....well "I woulda" "he shoulda" ....etc.

Again...remove some of the emotion & replace it with some thought.

Perhaps he never should have been a cop? But it's not easy as it is to find those that will take that job....and it's getting harder...... Perhaps he was never tested until that day? But 96 years in prison?

That just means one more life was taken that day........

I never said we had anything in common...and I am glad as well.

Yeah right....killing himself will bring back all those lost ....more emotion....some twisted form of revenge.

That just means one more life was taken that day........

Well it could have been a dozen or more less if he had done something. And those were young lives he could have saved. Kids with maybe 60 years ahead of them. Allowed to die because one tired old cop with maybe 20 years left decided his ass was worth more than theirs.

So you're one of those bleeding hearts who doesn't believe in the death penalty?

I would have never guessed!

You do not even know me, and yet you continue to judge me.

Wrong, I do believe in the death penalty....Big Time....for criminals that have been convicted .

{Although there are those that believe they [criminals] are punished more by long term incarceration}

I go for the throat...

Our asses are always worth more than any ones....to us. To say / think otherwise is being disingenuous.

If one of your grandchildren needed a heart...you might well say here take mine.....would you do the same for me?...I doubt it.

If that officer would have run in , guns blazin' and gotten killed right off the top?...what good would that have done those kids?
He could not have called for help, more time, someone else would have had to call 911, more time....all this time kids are being shot as well.

Is it the last word you want? Well OK.

I'm sure you would have saved the day , you are the bravest the best, rush in guns blazin, save the world....right?

Police have protocols for how to handle these types of situations. We all remember the killings on the University of Texas campus when Charles Whitman, who was a Marine took an arsenal of weapons and ammo up to the tower over the administration building and killed some 16 people. That's actually when many police departments began organizing plans on "how to" if this should occur in their district. He also had killed his mother and wife just the night before. It was later learned that he had a brain tumor.

No town is absent from violence. Worse part is, it's going to happen again.
