Political funerals.

I kind of feel like the Grinch at Xmas. But I think the trend in political funerals is becoming a little much. While I admired the latest to pass away, I believe the funerals were too long ,and drawn out. Yes, you do feel shocked and greatly saddened. Yet, I don't believe a long, protracted 5-6 day funeral adds much. I really don't think 24 hour news coverage of a funeral is necessary. "Yes, the wheels of the plane have touched the tarmac. We have confirmation the wheels HAVE touched the tarmac at 2:58 EST." 5-6 days of watching hearses takes away from the one meaningful service. Especially if it's the fourth service of the day.

I'll hafta agree with you fuzzybuddy. Even some of the other channels showing the same thing, like a hearse driving around
the city, block after block. Air time is frightfully expensive. Show me the money; where's it coming from?

Half the world is dying from malnutrition, but The show must go on !

I agree it was a bit too much coverage, every TV channel and radio station for around a week. But I agree with Aunt Bea, there was a choice when you felt the overload.

I completely agree. 6 days of death / mourning / funeral coverage left me numb so I stopped watching the news until Fri. when it was finally over. I'm talking about Bush Sr.

Just one thing...I didn't consider it a political funeral. Even though I am not in the political party of the late George H.W. Bush, I still believe he deserved the honor of the kind of funeral he had. And the same goes for every past and present U.S. President. I think if we have a complaint then it's on the TV news programs. When I got sick of it I just got up and changed to some other channel, such as ID Discovery, you know, true crime. :badgirl:

I have no interest in any funeral, political, family or friend. I would sooner remember a person in life if they were worth remembering, not in death.

I agree. JFK's only ran for three days and he was assassinated. But Bush dies at the ripe old age of 94 and he gets six?

Personally, I don't like funerals period.

I have left instructions with my wife and kids to go with the minimum allowable by law when it comes to disposing of my remains.

My husband and I have no wish to have a funeral, we just want our remains taken to the crematorium and incinerated.

That might have something to do with the fact that [back then] people weren't fixated on 24/7 news?

Yes, by the end of the week I was pretty much OD'ed on it. I felt for the family Of President Bush, like they were under a microscope the entire week. I did have a moment of "If I have to hear Hail to the Chief one more time I will scream". The fact that they televised the PRIVATE funeral was the icing on the cake.

I will have to admit, though, that the Dateline episode with Jenna and her memories and interviews with "Gampy and Gamma" was great. I did enjoy that look back.

When we watch TV we can chose from Terrarium, KODI, NetFlix & Amazon Prime. No advertisement and no repeating over & over the same news.

For news we have a little 35" HD TV in the kitchen hooked to a HD antenna. Don't watch to much news any more, only part of the funeral was when the herse was transporting Bush's body to air force 1 to fly to DC. Only a minute of that was enough.

I watch the streaming channels almost completely now, with an occasional glance at CNN to see if anything interesting has happened. With all the funeral coverage last week, I barely looked at it at all. Much too much coverage, IMO. Why would anyone other than immediate family and friends care that much about anybody's funeral?

Agree. Plus by about the 3rd day, all I could think about was "how much is this costing???" I mentioned to my husband that GHWB's casket has more frequent-flyer miles than most people. And his own train...gah.

But it was a nice tribute. And we have several former Presidents lined up so we may be seeing another extravaganza before long. Carter is also in his 90s, though he was always so unassuming that he will probably be buried in a pine box in Plains.

I'm willing to bet that someone in Washington D.C. has a team at work planning a bigger more elaborate funeral than the one for Bush 41.

The parts I watched, I watched on cspan so i didn't have to listen to a bunch of talking heads trying to find things to say.
I think by the last day the family the family must have been exhausted. As the mom of a Navy vet, my heart was with all the young military carrying out their roles to perfection, and I was hoping their families saw them.
