President Putin delivers nuclear warning to the West over Ukraine

The world was lucky that a brilliant statesman such as Gorbachev was on scene, being instrumental in ending the Cold War.

A little humor can go a long way in easing tension.

It doesn't seem like a great time to have an 80 year old leader in this War of Words.
Hope his surrounding 'cast of characters' is up to toning down the rhetoric, and the challenges ahead.

The Russian people are going to have to stand up for themselves & against him if they ever want to have change for the good. No other country can go in their & remove him for them. Whenever that happens, it seems the problem gets worse with the next one in charge.

I just wonder if they have been oppressed for so long many generations, modern day serfdom, that they no longer know how to.
Russia is a dictatorship. Anyone who stands up to Putin, or God forbid, leads a movement in opposition to him, can count on death under strange circumstances or an involuntary vacation in the Gulag. Russia‘s allies, China and North Korea, are equally dictatorial, share a mutual hatred of the US, and are desirous of expanding their borders and seizing their neighbors. The dreaded US stands in their way. What do those three have in common? A large stockpile of nuclear weapons. A nuclear attack on the US would likely mean an Earth blanketed in radiation and could spell the end of humanity.

Reagan was already out of office by then, Pres. GWH Bush was only 67.

It won't be the end of humanity, but it will cause a lot of very, very serious inconveniences. And lots of deaths.

Putin is not insane, IMHO. He is doing a precarious juggling act, as Murrmurr points out. If he does not win soon in Ukraine or at least force a truce, Russia's economy will collapse completely. They have only two valuable global exports: potash and oil. Due to sanctions Russia has a domestic oil glut, with no more places to store it and no way to ship it anywhere (the Western insurers have stopped writing insurance on them and there is no one else NOR ANY COUNTRY who can/will insure Russia's sea trade). The pipeline to China is at max capacity so Russian cannot dump any excess oil there, either.

Putin absolutely must have that truce or win before those Siberian fields are forced off-line. He can threaten all he wants...but the only source of oil engineering technology is in the West. Russia, Korea, and China are completely incapable of doing this on their own.

Russia's western oil fields are already shut down, but can be restarted. The critical/essential issue is the Siberian oil fields, which are far bigger. It took 30 yrs to build out and massive Western corporate investment to get those wells running. If those wells have to be shut down as unneeded, the oil turns to gel-like sludge and the pipes freeze, then burst.

Every rig will become unusable, and new wells will have to be drilled - and it will take just as long to build out as it did before.

Putin and Xi are second-class world powers. They have no capability of projecting their military power over oceans. As pointed out above, nuclear weapons are essentially useless once everyone has them; war is fought over the value of land. Render the land useless and these days, it hurts everyone. Do not forget that the U.S. is one of only 7 countries that produces enough food to feed its own population AND export. Ruin our farmlands and millions worldwide will starve - and that includes China and Russia.

Russia needs Ukraine desperately. It was known as "the breadbasket of the U.S.S.R." in pre-Glasnost days. It was to the U.S.S.R. as Kansas et.al. is to the U.S.

Global trade only operates as we know it now, because the U.S. agreed after WWII to use the U.S. Navy to patrol the oceans and protect global shipping lanes. No other country has the nuclear navy we have. Even a single US nuclear submarine's weaponry could annihilate the industrial capability of China or Russia.

Russia has one nuclear submarine. It has been in drydock for repairs since 2019 and it's estimated to be another 7 yrs before it's seaworthy again.

I conject that the conflict in Ukraine is going to go on for a decade or so, just like what Putin did in Syria. With Ukraine, Putin wants their natural resources. Who knows why he helped destroy Syria and especially, Aleppo. He's a psychopath, that much is certain.
