Price increases

Did you really think that all this “demand” for higher wages was not going to come with a back end increase? Really? Have more money for what, food (prices have skyrocketed), fuel (prices have gone through the roof), homes/rents (good luck down the short pier for that one). There is always a ying and Yang for all. They say, be careful for what you wish for.

I don't see what's wrong with a living wage. But the high prices we are experiencing now are extraordinary and I'm not sure they can be laid at the doorstep of paying people fairly for their work. I think it's not taxing the wealthiest enough that is ruining our economy.

I'm no financial expert, or anything, but I don't think we understand the full impact of the Covid crisis. It has disrupted everything. We had workers before Covid. After Covid, nada. Alien abductions?????? And a little thing like a war, might also be a factor.
One thing I do know is that that there isn't a business that's not praying for workers.

So the living wage currently with the new price increases don’t take us back to where we were?

it often makes people lose ground when wages are lifted by rules instead of merit....
People are then judged by are they worth the better wage and for some the answer is NO......
Living wage is a term without meaning based on guesstimates and assumptions ..... each "improvement " comes with a backdoor cost ....
raising taxes... rising wages ....... equal rising rents/ prices but somehow Some think it is unconnected......

An important element is skyrocketing fuel prices. We may think of this in terms of what we pay at the pump, but there is much more to it than that. Diesel prices are soaring. Farm equipment, tractors, harvesters, and the like, are powered by diesel and fossil fuel, as are the trucks and ships that haul farm produce and the factories that produce our manufactured goods.

This economic chaos will most likely only be resolved by a rather severe Recession....and that could occur before this year ends. Everything...food, fuel, housing, etc., is putting more people in financial stress with every passing month. Presently "Demand" is soaring, while "Supply" continues to shrink. What we are currently seeing is similar to what was happening in the late 1920's....and That didn't end well.

Pensions haven't risen here..everyone on a fixed income is substantially worse off.. In the last 8 weeks we've seen a 54% rise in our already high Electricity and Gas prices.. people are now literally going to have to choose between eating or heating come the autumn . Huge hikes in Mortgage rates.. and and not only has our fuel shot through the roof in price since last year when it was £1.16 per litre...it's gone beyond many people's reach..

Today I had to fill up, and the BP garage was charging £1.88 per LITRE for unleaded fuel.which is the cheapest fuel.. ( I didn't pay that I went to Costco and got it for £1.67 per litre...still EXTORTION) ...and trying to meet all these huge price increases on a fixed income..

Yes, but price increases ensure that manufacturers and retailers don't lose any profit as a result of workers being paid a living wage. When I owned a small business, I accepted a slight loss in profits when I gave an employee a raise. And the loss was always temporary because a hard-working, customer friendly, fairly compensated employee always increased business.

Very true, but the new corporate model doesn't see it that way. They don't want to give up anything. We also have far to many who produce nothing, yet make huge sums of money just pushing currency around. As much as I dislike government interference, we really need some regulation on these things, along with the application of the anti trust laws to breakup these giant corporations, and create some competition in the market place.

I had been reading how inflation might have peaked, but Miss Transitory says inflation will be with us for awhile. In any case, a lot of upward revisions are taking place among the prognosticators, for this week's CPI report.

I too owned a small business. I just felt like I was doing the governments bidding by taking in taxes.🤪
