I wouldn't be so quick to put an innocent dog into this situation as some of you have suggested.
One Thanksgiving, when we lived out in the country, we were sitting down to dinner when we saw a coonhound looking through the window at us. I couldn't let him in for fear my tiny, territorial dog would get hurt. So I let him in the garage, gave him a big turkey dinner and he settled down for a nice winter's nap.
Sometime in the night my cat came home, saw an interloper, and lacerated his sweet face. He ran to the neighbor who took him to the vet (and then sold him for $3000.)
