Ramaswamy says DOGE should have an 18 month lifespan.

I read where Mr. Ramaswamy who will team up for Mr. Musk in the Department Of Goverment Efficiency wants that department to have an 18 month life, and then disappear, unless Congress votes to continue it. His feeling is that most programs and departments go on forever often past their useful life. So, leading by example, DOGE will be limited to 18 months and self-destruct. Also, he wants it to be advisory, and then put the burden on Congress to actually, change the laws to make things more efficient. IOW, less of these Executive Orders that bypass Congress's job and constitutional authority.

Every new bunch of leaders is going to get right in there and 'fix' all the things that are wrong from the previous bunch. Sounds good. But"fixing" things means you'll be angering those who are happy with the way things are. And fixing stuff may be worse than what you have, as there may be a good reason for what is. Quick fixes seldom work with large governmental programs.

So the former head of a Wall St. firm and a pharmaceutical firm — two of the most despicable and destructive industries in America — is going to decide what programs and departments will exist to serve the general public. Great idea! What could go wrong?

I think this "Efficiency Dept" is totally naive. Just because someone works for the government does not necessarily mean they have the intelligence of celery. If there was a quick fix, they would have done it.
What's going to happen is we will create a whole new government agency to oversee several departments, and then another super agency to oversee that one.

I think you are wrong. Just my opinion. Like anything new, let’s wait and see what happens. However, with these 2 brainiacs otj, I would think something will come from it. Government has gotten big, very big. If you remember, Reagan shortened the size of government, but was criticized for not going far enough.

I also heard on one of the podcasts that came from CNN that they want workers that are now working from home to return to their desk or office. I doubt if that will make any of those people that are effected by this move very happy, if it even happens.

BTW, MSNBC is for sale at a very cheap price, if anyone is interested. Some say it’s not for sale and Comcast has not definitively said either way yet.

I really dislike podcasts and podcasters. If it weren’t for politics, they wouldn’t be necessary. These podcasters have become millionaires telling the same stories day after day. Each one is the same, they just tell the same story differently. Joe Rogan, who is considered the King of podcasters, is the biggest and richest podcaster on the internet. Personally, I can’t stand him because I think he leaks too much information, which starts a lot of stories floating about on the internet. About 75% of what he puts out there is interesting, but has no effect on my life, which is why I don’t listen to him.

Reagan had his Grace Commission that had the same intent as DOGE. It did virtually nothing as the Congress did not enact any changes suggested by the Commission.

Under Regan the National Debt tripled and there were 324,000 more federal workers when he left office than there were when he took office. (Of those 324,000 new fed employees 25% were military.)

I’ve been looking for the article that mentioned the DOGE time limit of 18 months. I can’t find it any any other mention of the limit. Was this a figment of my imagination? Or bad searching on my part? I don’t know.

No President will be able to put a dent in the deficit until the Congress agrees to cooperate. This is in the Constitution.

Spending authorizations must start in the Congress, mostly in the House of Representatives.

The house of representatives can not only refuse, but they alone can propose the supplies requisite for the support of government. They in a word hold the purse; - James Madison

The point is Reagan is remembered for shrinking the size of .gov when, in fact, he did not. And I am still waiting for the "trickle down" we've been promised before each and every tax cut that did nothing except increase the wealth divide and added to the deficit.

If you want to discuss the Regan admin, perhaps it’s better to start another topic to deal with that.

We are discussing DOGE and the related activities including Reagan's Grace Commission and the results of the GC, which were minimal as indicated by the fed deficit and fed employee count.

As pointed out, the power of the purse is held by Congress, specifically the House of Representatives, not the Executive branch. (Article 1, Section 7 of the US Constitution). No more additional funding = no more additional employees. Unless people want to work for free.

A sunset provision is one way to keep new programs and agencies from going on and on and on when their useful life has ended, or they are no longer working properly, or both. If DOGE has 18months to do its job that is a good example of a sunset provision.

I am thinking at the moment of the Space Launch System (SLS) which started at 11 billion dollars for this new rocket. It is now more than double in cost, with launches costing over one billion dollars each. Is that practical on a cost basis? Are there other rocket systems that would be cheaper? Or has the purpose changed so as to provide jobs in a certain states or congressional districts? Somebody needs to ask these questions.
