Really interesting brick work on the tower, @hollydolly Is that a more recent addition (like victorian era?)
The church has been standing since before 969..exactly how long before no-one is certain but in AD 969 the land with the parish was gifted by King Edgar to Westminster AbbeyReally interesting brick work on the tower, @hollydolly Is that a more recent addition (like victorian era?)
Fascinating history! The church has been standing since before 969..exactly how long before no-one is certin ut in AD 969 the land with the parish was gifted by King Edgar to Westminster Abbey
The tower was constructed in two stages. The lower two storeys were built in AD 1380 along with the archway that separates the tower from the nave.
The third storey was added in the 17th century.
At the same time the spire was added. When erected it was described as having 16,000 oak shingles.
Nowadays the shingles are made from cedar that unfortunately has a special attraction for woodpeckers inevitably leading to the need for increased maintenance.
It's pretty much the same in all the villages and market towns... so much of it dates way back to the middle ages and earlier... another church not anywhere nearly as attactive.. but still in good condition just a few minutes drive is dated AD 11th century, ..and still very much in daily use...Fascinating history!
