Reflections of My Life

Probably not. I have a package downstairs and can't get it until either my son comes again or someone that lives on my floor sees it and brings it up. But the men who live on my floor won't be the ones doing that. It is usually the women who think to do something like that.

I am thinking of making another attempt at going down the stairs tomorrow. Two of my friends have done it a few times and both of them are in really bad shape. So if they can do it, why can't I? I will see what tomorrow brings.

I applauld your bravery, for having the drive and courage to try. I would suggest that you have your son, Sonny or someone to be there when you try it, That way if you have trouble someone is there to help you back home. You might be able to get down and back but if the goal is to do laundry or get a package you need to think, plan and test how you can get that done. Would it be possible to tie a laundry basic it pull behind you up and down. If your mobile chair is in your apartment, is there somewhere on the first floor to keep it without worry?
Could you put it in your storage area? If you can get to it, at least ;you could get outside for fresh air.

I like that you keep thinking of ways for me to do things. After I wrote that last night, I got up from the chair and ugh! I could not walk even a foot without holding onto the walker. Not sure why that happens but it does. I don't know how bad I would be if I did not do things. Sitting in a chair all day probably would make it worse. But I have chores to do and a bunny to care for.

What motivated me to write that last night was because a so called friend on fakebook implied I was being a baby. That she lived near a lot of 80 and 90 year olds and I should see what they can do. So I got angry at her and I still am. I am going to get rid of her as a friend. She is not someone I know in person but a cousin of Sonny's. My right shoulder is really hurting and even typing this I feel a twinge of pain with every letter, so how can I hold on the railing to navigate those steep stairs?

My mobile chair is in my apartment and there is no way to take it downstairs without the elevator.

Walked this morning, 8 laps. I honestly don't know if I can or should increase that yet. My knees hurt after I am done. I don't want to overdo it and do any harm to all ready crippled knees. My friend from downstairs came up the stairs today with her cane that has 4 little feet on it. Seems pretty sturdy. She brought my package to me and it was kind of heavy. So we sat in here and talked a bit.

I managed to get all my chores done today, including cooking two different meals and having the keto peanut butter ice cream for lunch. I am finally getting enough protein and fat in. I had to give up Intermitten Fasting for good. Otherwise there is not enough time in the day to eat all the protein I need. Protein heals your body and I need more than 100 grams, more like 120-140. I am finally hitting the right amount.

Problems, problems, problems............is that what life is all about? It is like we are all in a game and given problems to handle and see how we do. When I moved here I was so happy and thankful. Now this past year has been a year of problems. A year of watching others deal with health problems. They are just a part of life, I suppose. Like a vegetable plant growing in my garden. A season is a whole lifetime to them.

Today after my morning walk, I am going to my friend's apartment for coffee. There will be four of us there. We have become quite close friends and three of us live on this floor. We discussed inviting another lady but since two of us are going through some stuff and need to discuss it privately, we decided against adding anyone else. Some people gossip and even if we love them and are friends with them, it is best not to include them. At least right now. Sometimes we need to discuss personal things the we do not want the whole building to know about.........right now.

Today the manager should be here. I will call her and ask her to take my garbage out (Jeff has not been here in 2 days now). And tell her I want to order groceries through Instacart and will need her to meet the shopper at the door and bring them up to me again. I am also going to call my counselor at Office for the Aging and see if there is any kind of help they can furnish for us until this elevator is repaired. Maybe a person who would come here and do our errands for us.

I saw on fakebook that the taxi service that is here is going out of business. They charge $5.00 to wherever you are going, one way. With the price of gas they can't make it anymore. Most of the people using it are low income and can't afford ten dollars extra to go to the store. I know for me, it is less than that for me to use Instacart so I will keep using that. Another person asked if they started a new taxi service would we use it if they charged $10.00 a trip one way. When people said no, others chimed in saying we expect everything for free. Well, no we don't. But if you do not have that much extra in your budget then how can you use their service? The bus is only fifty cents if you have a Medicare card. Besides if nobody could afford the other taxi service, how could they afford one that charges double?

Hey, @katlupe ... sorry to hear about the taxi situation. Maybe if gas goes down again at some point, the service will return. I can't see how any transportation business can keep a head above water in times as these. Did you enjoy your coffee gathering? ☕
I have never used the taxi service as of yet. Just figured it was there just in case.

Yes, we had a wonderful time at our coffee hour. Good to get together with each other.

Yesterday the manager, nor the maintenance man showed up here. I called the office and left a message because you never call and actually talk to a person. It is frustrating. I lost my patience finally and called the office of the aging and just said, "I need help!" After I explained everything that was going on here, she said she had to talk to some others and would get back to me or an outreach worker would call me. Nope. I called back around 3 and she said she was still working on it. Hoping I hear something today.

In the meantime, my old manager, the one who is helping us, sent me a fakebook request so I can talk to her. She wanted my copies of the papers about the elevator. All I want is someone to do our errands for us. Instacart does not come inside our building. I have to meet them at the back door by the ramp. So my aide is supposed to work today and if so maybe I can schedule the delivery to take place at that time. I will see. Garbage, laundry and mail are the other things I need help with. You would think they would make sure we had help in this situation.

My friend has Parkinson and her doctor just told her she is not to walk down stairs. Even when someone is helping her because you lose control of your legs in an instant with no warning. It has been happening to her but luckily she was home every time. This is a very stressful time for her.

Mysteriously, the elevator started working yesterday............nobody came here to work on that I saw. It has a notice on it that if it works and you use it, that you could get stuck on it. The thought of that scares me and I don't dare take the chance. I am also afraid to take it downstairs and not be able to get back up. I really doubt I can walk up the stairs. Unlike most of the others, it is not a breathing issue with me. I am sure I would have no trouble with breathing but it is definitely a knee and leg issue. My legs feel heavy due to Lymphedema and my knees are tight and swollen most of the time.

On a good note, Committed Care called and asked me about my aide. I told her that the aide said she can only work two hours a week and not the 15 that I am supposed to have. I would like at least six. Maybe 3 hours every other day or something like that. Not this aide. They are going to find another aide so I would have two. Once they do that I will cancel the first one. If she doesn't really need or want the job, give the hours to someone who does.

Sorry if I sound like a whiner, but sometimes in this earthly life you have to whine to get things done. Have a great day!

It's a such a big deal when you're stuck indoors because of the ineptitude of others.. so I really can understand you letting off steam here.

You're right about the Parkinsons and your neighbour. My father had Parkinsons disease.. and I have a nieghbour who is only a young 50.. but he has it.. and he walks around our roads almost every day... for exercise.. no stick, but he walks almost on his tiptoes.. and in starts and stops.. . Sometimes he gets totally stuck for up to 10 minutes, he just waits it out .. he has no other option... and then he starts again . It's like a short circuit in the Brain to the legs..

Katlupe, love reading about your rabbit. I grew up with four rabbits: Peter and his sisters Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail.

They were well behaved bunnies who tried to stay out of trouble …unlike their brother Peter who was a lovable scamp! I was also born in the year of the rabbit!

Stay well hon….really hope your lift is fixed soon 🌷🌷

That's BS, believe me I know having lived with elevators. Probably your elevator is so old parts are no longer being made for it, and they don't want the expense of changing the whole thing, which is also a nightmare.

The phone number they gave you is not for a company, but a woman in Endicott NY.
actually for MSW workers, not an elevator company. This is criminal, I'm really so outraged on your behalf so you can remain calm! Hugs, Kat.

Call 911 if someone is stuck in the elevator. The fire department will respond, and help anyone (or everyone) out. I was in a stuck elevator in a nursing home and that is what happened.

It is also good to have the fire department report. It is horrible, and possibly criminal, that the landlord has not assigned someone to assist the residents during this time.

It just might be a woman somewhere because she always answers the phone. I call there and tell her what the emergency is and then Rich, our maintenance man usually calls me right back.

No. It is an MSW office of some agency; probably one that deals with folks like the people living in your bldg. As I said, I'm willing to be outraged on your behalf so you don't have to be. ;)

They FINALLY did that today. This is the new letter they gave us today:

PS, Call the number (block your number) and see who answers. Or don't block your number and make up some reason, like isn't this the office of?

msw
Master's of Social Work who in this case probably deal with miscreants like the tenants. I don't know. Call the number!

I call that number all the time. She says "Emergency services." I called this morning and told her "I need help!" First I gave her my name and apartment number and phone number. Then told her I have 3 bags of garbage and have no way to get them to the dumpster. Told her to have Rich call me. He came to my apartment a bit later and took my garbage out for me.

Friday morning, 11:00 AM, WBNG reporter and camera will be here and interview some tenants in the community room. Then they want to video the stairs and the elevator.

Tomorrow my good friend will be coming to help me again. So I think I will get my laundry done and my mail and can order groceries. I am looking forward to her visit, even if she wasn't helping me. I didn't do so well today. Office of the aging will not return my calls, then I find out they won't return anyone's calls.
