Reflections of My Life

This afternoon I got stuck in the elevator. I admit it I was scared. Thinking about it now, the reason I was scared was not that I thought something would harm me. But I had Jeff's groceries on the seat of my walker and could not sit down. Plus he had meat and ice cream in the groceries and it was hot in the elevator. I kept watching and it would not move. I pushed another button and still would not move. It was buzzing to let someone know outside of the elevator (I think). I called my manager and when she answered I said, "I am stuck in the elevator and I am scared."

All of a sudden it went to the lower level and she was there when it opened. So she rode up with me to Jeff's apartment and then to my own. Thank God she was here!!!!

another reason for everyone to have a mobile phone....glad it all turned out well, and I hope it doesn't put you off going in the lift

The manager said the man from Otis is supposed to come and look at it. She thinks the problem is people holding the door open when moving stuff in or out. I told her when people are talking, and I am guilty of this myself, and they hold the door while finishing their conversation. It will buzz when you do that. I will not do that myself ever again.

I've never heard of this before. When I was a kid..I used to deliver milk in the mornings before school. My round consisted of 3, 20 storey High Rise apartment blocks as well as houses.. .. we started at 4am and it was important to go as fast as possible to get finished early enough to get to school.. and also to try and not get in the way of people using the lifts to go to work.

Fortunately there was 2 lifts in each block.. and to be able to deliver the milk fast, we had to block the one of the lifts on each floor..so we would commandeer one of the lifts and would jam the door open with the milk crate on each floor, and dash to each door with the milk bottles and of course collect the empties.. There was 6 apartments on each floor.. The majority had milk delivered ( 1960's)... so letting the lift door close and then waiting for it to come back up was something we couldn't allow to happen or we'd have been there forever. It didn't seem to damage the lifts at all because they were working every morning for us...

Oh my, @katlupe I bet you were scared! I'm so relieved it worked out.

What magic did the manager use?

I was stuck in an elevator once, at my office. Going up to my floor, alone and with my coffee and toasted bagel. I had to put my stuff on the floor to use the elevator phone. Then I just sat on the floor and enjoyed my coffee and bagel until I was rescued.

But yeah, I was scared.

She did something in the room next to the elevator. It is a room with the furnace and pipes and all kind of stuff that runs the building. So must be the elevator motor and stuff is there too. I do not know what she did but she fixed it and rode up with me.

Well all I know is something causes it to do this. It is always seems to happen when people are moving in and moving out. I have said this before but didn't know it could be a problem with the door being held open. The buzzer does go off when it is held up.

Oh I'm not saying that it hasn't caused it.. I s'pose it all depends on the make of the lift... I just never experienced myself... :)

I agree with your theory about the problem with elevators. Movers just don't care about any problems they may cause.

My daily life consists of several elevator rides, taking doggy up and down, I've learned to 'expect the unexpected' .....

The last time I was stuck in an elevator here (one of a few times) was one early Sunday morning a few months ago. .... I was trapped on the 3rd floor coming back to my apartment.
I had my phone with me like always, but I called on the phone in the elevator, which connects to 911 and the Fire Dept. nearby.

Seemed like only 5-10 minutes later, 4 hunky firemen came to my rescue.
They drove into the complex with their fire truck sirens blaring .... probably woke up a lot of people in the buildings.:)

That was an interesting morning! ... my dog, Lil'Bear didn't even know that he had been stuck in the elevator -- totally oblivious to everything.

There’s a warning sign on a public elevator I have to take. It says approximately “do not hold the door, it will cause it to malfunction.”
I’m happy that you weren’t in that elevator too long, Kat.

I bet that was an experience you won't forget!

Two of our oldest tenants were stuck on the elevator together. But it was stopped between the floors. The EMT guys had to lift them out of it because neither one had the strength to be able to do it themselves. One lady was 99 at the time and the other 84. The younger lady uses a mobility chair and they had to take it apart to get it out of there. Then they had to use their stretcher to carry the older lady up to her 3rd floor apartment. The lady with the mobility chair is tiny so she was no problem for them. Anyway..........those guys were sweating............

I look at sugar now and think of it as poison. Actually today I had to order groceries for my son and he ordered 2 big things of ice cream and Nutty Buddys. Didn't even look good to me now. I had a black licorice ice cream that I made myself with Keto Chow (a keto meal replacement shake) and it was the best one I ever did. I think I increased the butter to 3 tablespoons and it must have made a difference. Ice cream and popcorn were my two worst addictions. I think I have beat that habit now.
I also feel the same way about sugar! I also loved Popcorn and ice cream. I've stopped popcorn, but still have ice cream (keto) once in a while.

I got a free gift in the mail the other day from a company I buy regularly from. They sent their new product out to all their customers who buy regularly from them. I normally buy the powdered electrolytes but looking forward to tasting these in sparkling water. Even if I like them I will probably not be buying them because the powdered form is easier for me to store in my kitchen.

DH buys electrolytes in a tablet form. Add one or two to water and they instantly dissolve. No stirring needed. They certainly aren’t inexpensive, no matter what type you buy.

I thought of you today when we got in the lift at the Mall, because there was big sign in there saying ''in the unlikely event of being stuck in this lift, please ring the emergency bell and keep it pressed for 3 seconds''.. and another list of instructions... but I hadn't even noticed instructions before for getting stuck in the lift, so I thought of you as soon as I saw it :D

The mall today...this corner of the mall was the busiest it got out of all of the malls... very quiet...

Sometime in the late '80s, I got stuck in an elevator, very early in the morning in my office building. It stopped between the 16th and 17th floors. I was alone, and no one answered the emergency call button. In a few minutes I realized for the first time that I was on the edge of panic, and I had a bit of claustrophobia.

I managed to pull the doors apart and there, just below my waist, was the floor of the 17th. I yelled, and as it was way early, no one answered. I kept pulling the doors apart and pondered the decision to crawl out to that 17th floor. The problem was, if the elevator began to move while I was getting out, I would be "squished". I recalled seeing a picture of a body caught like that in the "National Enquirer" years earlier.

Finally I got the nerve up and scrambled onto the floor, briefcase, suit and all. Needless to say, I was scared and definitely angry. I made sure the building manager knew about it, and that no one answered the emergency call button. Still, I never, ever rode in an elevator by myself again.

So scary! I would have been petrified in that situation.

The only instruction we have inside the elevator is telling you to get out as soon as the elevator doors open. One thing I would add is wherever you are using an elevator always look at the floor before you step out. Just to make sure it is there. Remember the scene in LA Law? Well that can happen but also if you step out without looking even if it is just a few inches below the elevator you can break your ankle or something worse.

Didn't have a very good day. Last night Sonny called me to tell his dog, Chichi had died. She went outside to the bathroom. Came back inside and got a bite to eat and then curled up on her couch to sleep. When his other dog, Cinnamon was barking at a car driving by and Chichi didn't move......he got concerned. Went over to her and she was dead. At least she did not suffer and it was quick and peaceful.

She was close to 20 years old. Actually she was his mother's dog and when she was dying she asked Sonny to take care of her. He did. Out of all his dogs, she was my favorite. I loved her and feel bad she is gone. When I went to his house she always wanted to sit on my lap and she was not a lap dog.

Very sad to hear about Chichi's passing. It's comforting to know that she went peacefully. Sonny will miss her :(

It's always hard to lose a beloved pet.

Its part of of life's plan that teaches us to accept death.
It is very hard. I dread the day I lose my bunny but know it is coming. He is 10 years old and that is old for bunnies. I will never have another pet so he is my last. I have always had pets but due to my age I don't want another.
