So apparently one deer paid a visit last night; plant in foreground had long, slender leaves of a day lily yesterday. Now it’s down to the nubbins. Arrrggggg

I wish no animal harm but is there something effective to deter the critters? I’d really like to enjoy my flowers this year.

I have a wire cage around my Oak-leaf hydrangea but I can’t do thee addy for all the plants. I want a garden, not a detention camp! 🙄😩😡

Google deer repellent Lots of ways to choose from.

My friend used to pee around the circumference of his garden. It worked.
That's what my grandfather used to do. He would go out at night and pee around the perimeter of the garden. A meat eating male pee-er would be preferable, but any pee will work. Perhaps you could convince your Prince of Men to take a whiz around. 🤔😁

It sounds weird but it isn't a joke and it works! I've used it for years. People use Fox Urine in and around their gardens but it's expensive. Using human urine is a good cheaper alternative if collecting it doesn't gross you out, lol! Unless you absolutely can't stand the idea, give it a try. It's just pee, I'd rather use that than try to repel them with toxic chemicals or ugly cages.

4 ounces for $11.99! >> https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/p...al-fox-urine-predator-scent-4-oz?cm_vc=-10005

Ahahaha…. This is a man who dresses each day in a button down shirt, pressed pants and good leather loafers. The one time we went to the beach (with the metal detector) he wouldn’t even take his shoes off to get his feet wet lol. So I doubt that seriously.

but all kidding aside, @Bella, I will check into what’s available at tractor supply. I just don’t want my yard to smell like a toilet 🙄

My grandparents hung several aluminum pie plates from the surrounding trees. It worked very well. Foil-wrapped paper plates would work the same. You can hang them from stakes or poles if you don't have trees close by. Just make sure they'll move in a breeze.
Great idea but the stinkers mainly come at night…. I’d have to rig up lights. Oy vey

Because they graze mostly in the late evening and very early morning, their eyes are extremely adaptable to changing light.
My grandparent's deer ate when all deer eat, and the "tins" worked.

Another option is a deer fence. I'm pretty sure your nearest Home Depot or Lowe's or whatever will tell you exactly what you need to make one.

I have a garden, and lots .of deer in our forest. I use a "motion sensor sprinkler", and it does a good job of keeping the critters away. It detects them when they get close, and shoots a strong rotating beam of water for a few seconds. Try these....

Any bottled commercial sprays are a waste of money, as the first time it rains, they get washed off.

What a great idea, and a good excuse to have a few beers!

In fact if you were to buy a case of beer and put up a sign offering it free to people who would help it might work. And even if it didn't you'd make some interesting new friends....

This is where male grandchildren can be a blessing. I don't know what it is about little boys but my son and my grandson liked to pee outdoors when they were little.

Ok, an update…. I did the bloodmeal as @Lee suggested…. So far 🤞🤞🤞 it’s worked. That day lily that was chewed off to the ground has rebounded and no other plants have been touched.

also the plants around which I put it are *very* happy/ flourishing. Thanks for the tip, Lee 😊🥳

Go to a barber shop and collect as much clipped hair as you can. Spread it around, scent of human hair repels deer. A few pre-1982 pennies spread around will do wonders for your garden as an effective insect repellent.

@CinnamonSugar
This works, and you can use your own hair clippings if you or any family member or friend, gets a trim,
and/or, ask any hairdresser you know, to give you some they regularly sweep up off the floor.

Sometimes people then put them into small net bags, such as hand-fashioned from old torn nylon stockings, or such, and then tie the small, filled sacks onto sticks.

(Also, for the alternate method explained above, even your Prince of men, might be convinced to take a very clean jar into the bathroom, in order to help out the plants. :giggle: )
If he declines, but wants to be helpful (as Princes often do want to:LOL:)
then he could ask his own barber, for the hair sweepings. :geek:

@Kaila … thanks for the suggestions. If things take a turn for the worse I will definitely have more options 😊
