Rethinking Forum/Social Media

Seriously questioning being on forums (not just this one) and social media. I hadn't been active on any sites in several years. During my time away what seems to be 'acceptable' has changed drastically. Personal attacks, rudeness, stalking an individual's posts & comments to mock or berate them. The list goes on.

Am I the only one that feels this way? I doubt it.
 

Is your profile right when it states you joined on 25 March 2025 and have posted 455 messages with a reaction score of 1,120? I ask only because, looking at that, it would seem you have been quite active on the forum and hopefully the reactions have been positive.

I think Matrix tends to only step in if things get unpleasant or forum rules are blatantly broken, I doubt if he would tolerate anything which could be described as stalking or mocking.

Like any conversation, online or in RL, some subjects can get lively but, honestly, I think people here are pretty well-behaved, especially me of course ;):)

Stalking ?... I presume you mean by that, that a person who doesn't agree with your posts is follwwing you from thread to thread?... If so...just put the beggars on ignore.. then you'll never see another post from them, I do it all the time...

Yes, those stats are probably correct. As I said, rethinking being active on forums....

I know lively. This isn't just "lively" I am talking about.

You are right, of course. Why waste time 'hanging out with' someone online that I would never in real life? I know this forum has the ignore, but I'm wondering if the one I had in mind does...... off to check! :)

I must be an odd duck because I don't give a diddley squat about rudeness, stalking, etc. If I don't like something, I turn away or "give it back"... but hopefully respectfully. However in my "infancy days" here, it didn't always turn out that way. I can provide references. :sneaky:

How exactly do you feel you're being "stalked?" I will say this... if you honestly think our SF forum falls into the category you're upset about, you may seriously need to visit some of the others that are active online and there may be a shock waiting. This is the most civilized forum I've been on, and I starting using them in the mid 90s.

Honestly that happens on more forums that you can shake a stick at...this forum, without doubt has it's problem posters, but they're easily dealt with.... so ...if there's no ignore button on the forum you're talking about...then literally you have 2 option... report them to their admin..or leave...

After checking, the main site I was thinking of does have an ignore feature. Which may help. Unfortunately it seems to be overrun with people who are the exact opposite of what I believe and stand for. Maybe not such a good "fit".

exactly... you're on the wrong forum then...just walk away.... what are you losing.. nothing, you're gaining peace of mind

Yes, there were some other forums I tried where there would be a few people that would ridicule just about anything anybody posted with the 😆 LOL reaction emoji. I quickly found the exit on those.
 
If you like the other forum as seeing what others think, do not post just observe. I have been on a forum where I received rude comments and left but somehow the person was able to contact me by email. He was quite nice but then he went away. I do not have that email account any more and think that site disappeared. It was late 90's.
