It was a thing in the Netherlands in the 50s and 60s. Anywhere else too? Yay! Go picknick for free at the roadside and watch cars.

It definitely was in the uk in the 60's... very common for people to just stop in the layby and hav a picnice with the whole family... we did it... once or twice...I still have the photos

We did that sort of thing quite often, in the days before there was a fast food drive thru at every intersection.

Unimproved roadside picnic area were quite common in New York State, many were built during the Great Depression as WPA projects.

IMO it’s still a great option overlooked by many young families on tight budgets.
