It definitely was in the uk in the 60's... very common for people to just stop in the layby and hav a picnice with the whole family... we did it... once or twice...I still have the photosIt was a thing in the Netherlands in the 50s and 60s. Anywhere else too? Yay! Go picknick for free at the roadside and watch cars.View attachment 469888

I agree; it's not only less expensive but also healthier.IMO it’s still a great option overlooked by many young families on tight budgets.
In the 60s Prince Phillip had this picnic trailer built to his specifications. One famous person who did this was the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen mother. After her husband, the king, died, she located to the Castle of Mey in the far north of Scotland. Her staff told stories of how she would take a rug and a flask of tea and sit at the side of the road. The locals all knew her and respected her privacy. This was just one of her rather eccentric behaviors.

It’s rare to see young people at a picnic table. We plan on doing that rather than wasting time in a restaurant. Today we went for a lengthy medical appointment and took sandwiches with us for the in between time. I could post this in the thread about being thrifty, though it’s more about being healthy.IMO it’s still a great option overlooked by many young families on tight budgets.
