It definitely was in the uk in the 60's... very common for people to just stop in the layby and hav a picnice with the whole family... we did it... once or twice...I still have the photos

We did that sort of thing quite often, in the days before there was a fast food drive thru at every intersection.
Unimproved roadside picnic area were quite common in New York State, many were built during the Great Depression as WPA projects.
IMO it’s still a great option overlooked by many young families on tight budgets.

I agree; it's not only less expensive but also healthier.
Haven't been on a road trip in a few years but I still do this. I take a cooler/ice chest with food and drinks, stop at what we call a "rest area" in the US, walk the dogs, and have my lunch there. I admit to a fast food drive through now and then, usually when I'm in more of a hurry to get down the road. Healthy or not, I order a plain burger for the dogs; they do love drive throughs, lol.
