The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has expanded the number of states where a salmonella outbreak in onions has been discovered. The outbreak is inked to onions from Thomson International, Inc., a California company.

Contaminated onions have now been found in 43 states and sickened 640 people, 85 of which required hospitalization, according to the CDC's website. There have been no deaths linked to the outbreak.

"Do not eat, serve, or sell onions from Thomson International, Inc., or food made with these onions," the CDC warns. "Onion types include red, white, yellow, and sweet yellow varieties. Other companies have also issued recalls of foods, like chicken salads, made with recalled onions."

Major grocery chains, including Walmart, Kroger, Giant Eagle and Publix have warned consumers against eating prepared foods that could contain recalled onions.

me too

Onions? My husband just told me about this today. He’s making sure onions aren’t imported. I’m glad he reads the news. I didn’t know onions could get salmonella but I suppose any ground vegetable can. I don’t know
Its only the ones from that company I posted in California.....nothing was said about imported ones @Keesha so they are the safe ones to eat.

To add to the confusion, Giant Eagle is listed as one of the grocery chains that sell onions from Thompson International. My local grocery chain is called Giant. I looked it up, and apparently it's not the same as Giant Eagle, no connection that I could see.

I bought a few onions at Giant the other day, one of which I've already used. No ill effects. I'm keeping them.

The people behind us son, works at a produce, hmm, supplier. They gave us a bunch of onions, not knowing the grower, I tossed them.

No! I refuse to believe!
Your telling me the innocuous onion is going to make me sick?

NO! I'm making my placards now; I have never demonstrated in my life, but there comes a time..."Eat Onions"
I will eat onions, I will, yes indeed.

If you ignore any warnings then they can't harm you-right?
What if we put a mask on each and every onion.

I had Salmonella once. I'd do anything to avoid that happening again.

Omgosh! Me too. I got it on a tent camping trip ...in the middle of July ...in Arkansas. At least the guy I was camping with EMT training. I cannot tell you how many bathroom stops we made on the five hour trip home. I'd go, get a coke on the way out and by the next town the coke had gone straight through. Rinse, and repeat with a temp of nearly 102. And my nurse mom was in Bolivia when I got home. I have never tent camped again. It's campers or cabins only for me now. Gotta have a toilet.

Also recalled were red onions packaged by Del Monte Fresh Produce and sold via bulk displays at Publix stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Virginia. The Lakeland-based chain says no Florida stores were involved in this recall of red onions shipped to Publix in July with product lookup number 4082.

The CDC’s state-by-state map says the only states without people sickened: Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Hawaii, Vermont and Rhode Island.

Predictably, considering Thomson International’s California home base, the states with the most ill sit in the Western United States region. Utah (90), Oregon (85), California (76) and Montana (52) account for 303 cases, 47.3 percent of the 640 cases total.

Update, September 4, 2020: The salmonella outbreak believed to be linked to red onions is still ongoing. As of the beginning of September, the outbreak has sickened 1,012 people in 47 states. The outbreak has caused 136 hospitalizations and no deaths. These illnesses started from June 19, 2020, to August 11, 2020.

Though officials believe that onions sold by Thomson International, Inc. are the "likely source" of red onions involved in this outbreak, they are still investigating.

Bought a few white and sweet onions again.....I've really missed adding them to my recipes....was using scallions but it's just not the same....
broke down and bought chopped beef which I haven't eaten in months.....really missed that too.....
