Scared of Landlord

Patnono, have you thought about applying for Section 8 housing, especially if your landlord is going to raise your rent and your income is going to have a difficult time keeping up. And your disability is going to help you qualify, too. In the apartment building I managed, we had several Section 8 tenants and it worked fine.

Even if your current landlord will not accept Section 8, you can be looking for those places that will.

Thanks, I'm not on disability, just regular retirement SSI. I have looked into Senior housing there's a LONG waiting list for that. I was looking into renting a room. I might have to leave the state. Even renting a room is expensive. Some are asking like $800 or more. Seems that everybody's on the GREEDY TRAIN??? And some senior agencies hold it against me that I have money in the bank. Believe me it's Not enough to retire on.

You don't have to be on disability to be on Section 8. I get a notice from the state to ask if I would accept someone's application for Section 8. Mostly I would accept. And, no, as someone has once stated, my building (48 unit) was not in some slum area. Very nice middle class neighborhood. You won't know until you try.

Yea, your right, but they do look at income right? I'm not working, my IRA is looked at as income.

Yes, income compared to the cost of renting a place in the area that you live. Your IRA is not going to count. No use arguing with me. Argue with the state that is going to decide to put you on the waiting list for Section 8 or not. Just giving you some information.

Sorry, not arguing with you, if it seems like it? I apologize. I appreciate the information, Really 🙂

I know you do, but you need to do something. Starting with Section 8 is something at least. Even if you get on a waiting list.

You are retired, have you considered moving to a place less expensive than CA?

As you age those stairs will become higher and higher.

I was thinking about that? One of my siblings brought up a good point, my health isn't good, I have diabetes, macular Degeneration a form of blindness, high cholesterol, etc. With that being said, if something happened i would be alone. My whole family is here.

she's been raining my rent yearly $100 usely, last year $200. October's next month is if she raises the rent that's when she'll do it? So I'm having tremendous anxiety worrying if or how much?

Back when I had a rental, a couple of decades ago, I remember the rule was that a fair rental raise was like 3% a year or the same as inflation for that year.

Yes, she didn't even bother to meet me when I first moved in. My first meeting with her I was given the riot act on watching my kids and who was going to be watching them? Even now, my grandson who lives with me, there was a notice put on my door advising me that he wasn't allowed to play outside. That's one of her list of rules posted outside. It's Not that I'm nesscisarily Scared of her persay, just afraid she's looking for something to get on me about?

That's unusual. How did you get this place if you didn't meet with her? Through a rental agency? Other? Does she live in the same townhouse complex making it easy for her to keep an eye on you? How terrible to live in such fear all the time of being evicted or having the rent raised. Do you have options if you want to move like other places that would fit your needs without exceeding your budget?

Thanks for writing, she had someone managing the complex for her. She owns several other properties from what I understand, she lives in one of them. I haven't seen her lately. I don't go out much, I have anxiety and depression. So I stay inside Alot. IAM looking into moving senior housing is rough to get. So maybe rent a room?

@Patnono
We'd love to rent to you, but since we live smack in the middle of the U.S., you'd have to move quite a ways. :)

It does sounds like she will raise your rent again next month. Especially with the vacancies she has now, she has to cover that rent from somewhere. I know that moving isn't easy, but what would be better for you? To keep living where you are now or move to a senior living place? You have to factor in both costs and the effect on your health. Whichever way you decide, I wish you the best of luck.
Thank you, I have a lot to think about?

I haven't heard of rooms for rent since the sixties. Anybody else? But you could rent a condo affordably depending on the landlord. You have no family with a house who would provide a home for you, even temporarily?

Rooms for rent??? Tons of them, there are several websites where people are looking for roommates. The thing is most are charging a arm and a leg for. You might as well rent a apartment? I have several brothers all married, you've heard the saying "Too many women in the kitchen"? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want me there, trust me I know. I have a married daughter, don't know what's up with them? But their Anti-family, he doesn't talk well about his family and I hear that my daughter is already complaining about if I need Any assistance she'd be asked to help. I think she wants to have this in common with her husband? I can only hope that I can find senior housing or a room to rent?

You have been living in the place for twenty years. And she's fixed everything you asked? What types of, and how many incidents have there been with this owner? Have the teneants, who moved away, said anything to you as to why they left.
