Scientist Predicts Brutal Population Correction

Other than a mass mobilization of global leaders to get this under control, we are headed off a cliff.
I respectfully disagree. The "global leaders" sold out their citizens decades ago to tech and major corporations and now don't even pretend to care about us. Our only hope is unity and trust in one another. We will ALWAYS outnumber them and this is a huge advantage. So let's focus on our similarities instead of our differences and revolt against these sellouts.

Eons ago, cyanobacteria started emitting a poison, oxygen, onto the earth. And since then, every living thing has changed the earth is some way. By the time it gets to humans, we're extremely adapt at altering the earth. Do I think there will be some calamity which drastically alters the human population? Yes, but it could be a million things. I believe for the foreseeable future we will be able to keep ourselves fed, unless a meteor, or something decides otherwise. I just don't believe the near future is one of death and destruction.

You are right on! I will amend the sentence to "Other than a mass mobilization of pissed off citizens to get this under control". :) Really you are right about the 1% not being interested in the 99%.
Watch the movie I just put on here about that very thing. https://www.seniorforums.com/threads/what-was-the-last-movie-you-watched.42375/post-2629262

I know people who have changed their evil ways. Is it possible for humans to change theirs?

"In three words, I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life. It goes on. In all the confusions of today, with all our troubles . . . with politicians and people slinging the word fear around, all of us become discouraged . . . tempted to say this is the end, the finish. But life — it goes on. It always has. It always will. Don’t forget that."

-Robert Frost

The people outnumber the problems that the people in charge like to conjure up. The problems are bigger than we are and the solutions are something that work themselves out in time.

When Robert Frost said that there were approximately 3 billion people on the planet. In 70 years since his death ( 1963 ) it has exploded to 8 billion. Now THAT is trouble that Frost couldn't imagine.

To reiterate "Now THAT is trouble that Frost couldn't imagine." Yea, all throughout mankind's history there has been big trouble. Maybe we will be able by 2100 to have a few humans and species left. Our decedents will find out. That matters to me.

I agree that predictions aren't fact, that time & proof positive are what we humans can deal with. And ever hopeful that a solution will change the inevitable years from now.

Considering the quantity of humans consuming resources & the ever increasing population HOPE is nice but at some point action will be needed. Stuff of science fiction now but, I've recently come to consider space exploration is about finding another planet that has a real possibility for sustaining human life.
Your comments about space exploration and finding another planet reminded me of the time when I was growing cells in the Petri dish. When the cells overcrowded the Petri dish (ran out of food and started dying off), we had to remove a fraction of them (couldn't use them all!) and reseed those few cells into a new Petri dish with fresh food to allow them to populate the new dish. So our earth could be a large Petri dish! Hmmm...

I'm assuming these researchers used computer modeling to make their "prediction".

Results of computer modeling depend on how accurate the scientific model used to create the simulation is to begin with, how accurate the data input is, and whether or not the researchers can predict an event that could effect the results...like predicting how long fossil fuels will last when you can't take into account the discovery of an as yet unknown energy source or that technology will advance beyond even requiring mined and man-made energy sources. And no one can predict that.

I wish they'd use the word "hypothesize" instead of "predict".
Good points, @Murrmurr !
Here is something that describes the difference between a hypothesis and a prediction, yet also shows how they relate. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zsg6m39/articles/zwj3ydm

what about the theory that we are all being watched over and cared for by angels until we pass over and join them??
It's a theory, but an irrelevant one that doesn't address the problem we are talking about. Actually, it doesn't qualify as a theory, but that's another debate.

Perhaps a timely breakthrough in Fusion science and technology can save the day....
Hope! I am not familiar with fusion science but given that it probably relies on natural resources at some point that too would be depleted. Then what?

All this isn't something that will impact me since I'm on the downside of life. I'm just curious what the thoughts of younger seniors like in their early 50's with the potential of negative impact on their lives think.

When I consider what the future probably holds for our future generations, I sometimes wish that we had remained "childless". We're old enough that we won't be around to see the looming problems, but our kids, grandkids, and beyond may well face problems that will impact them substantially.

what about the theory that we are all being watched over and cared for by angels until we pass over and join them??
I lost any belief I had left in that theory this year. So now it's just me and my human brothers and sisters on this planet. We'd better get along and problem solve. :)

I am surprised to read all these comments. Perhaps some folks are finally getting the message that there are just too many folks around on this planet. Mother Earth is suffering. We are taking too much from her and not putting much back.

I have been talking about over population and the population explosion for a long time. Finally other people are finally waking up to the reality.

Wars and diseases have been controlling populations for thousands of years. The future will prove to be very interesting for those that survive.

Humans are parasites and the earth is our host. Eventually the parasites kill the host or the host kills the parasites.

On the bright side with the upcoming mass extinction and the decline in US males life expectancy I'm going to stop worrying about planning for Required Minimum Distributions, it's looking like I won't reach 72.
The main reason for the declining US male population is that the younger population are having dogs and cats rather than children. Where I live there is an explosion in the dog and cat population. Apartments are full of them. Some apartments now feature "pet washing stations." Dogs and cats are "in." People are out!

I thought that there was only like one or two countries left on the planet that are having more than replacement numbers of children, and a lot of countries are complaining about decreasing population. Which seems crazy since we all know that we need to decrease population on the planet.

Does each country think that it is only the other countries that need to decrease? I think the shrinking populations are a good thing, because not only will it get us back to sustainable levels -- eventually, I forget when it is predicted to actually be done, I remember something about we are only increasing now by people aging and once we get over the hump - aka the big old people group dies off, that population will be dropping.

If AI does a lot of the future jobs, and if it is true that young people today will benefit from advances in medicine that will extend their lifespans (including maintaining youthfulness well into the years we currently experience old age), then I'd think countries currently complaining about their decreasing populations should be happy instead.

It sucks if it turns out we are the last generations that have old age decrepitude and die earlyish. OTOH the idea of having to work well into a person's 70s sounds depressing, hope they are right that old people will feel youthful.

Yet people keep breeding like rabbits......
Actually, no. In many countries the fertility rate has dropped below replacement levels. China imposed the one child policy and the effect of that now is that young Chinese women are reluctant to have babies. This is also happening in other modern countries.

Replacement rate is 2 or more children per woman

This link lists fertility rates for 2022. The highest rates are listed first. There are more countries where the rate is below 2 per woman than there are above.

United States is just above 2 (2.06), New Zealand just below (1.97), UK (1.85), Australia (1.76), Canada (1.72). Japan is only 1 birth per woman. Russia is 2, Belarus is 1 and Ukraine is also 1. China is 2.

Countries where birth control is unavailable or limited have much higher rates. Most are in middle Africa. The highest rate country is Niger with over six children per woman.

There are three pages of tabulated data here, as well as an interactive map
