Scientists Have Surprisingly Specific Answer on Alien Life

Wow. Pretty grim take. No mention of Bach, flowers, the ocean at sunset, Rembrandt, Shakespeare, the Beatles, apple pie, the conquest of polio and smallpox, penicillin, the Internet, Lee Child, lions, birds, dolphins, college campuses, cheeseburgers, France, anything? Just death and destruction everywhere?

Maybe we do live on different planets.
VERY TRUE. Sometimes I slip into the dark side of life forgetting that we have choice and there’s still a world full of beauty and compassion.

If whatever aliens are out there can get past our hostility , they will see plenty of beauty.

Thanks for that reminder. I really needed to read that today. 👍❤️

Rose-coloured glasses are marvelous things, aren't they?

Since God supposedly created the earth & universe and is still monitoring humans on earth wouldn't it then be true God is responsible for alien life? I'll bet it's that tower of Bable story & the aliens are the cast outs.

Perhaps the point here is ,if I may suggest, that if we don't look after and care for the beautiful 'things' etc in our life that you have referenced then they will not be available to others to enjoy in the future ☺ Not sure about cheeseburgers though!!!!!:)

It is a good point that you make. It's all about balance, isn't it?

Do you see balance on this planet today?

What sort of balance are you talking about? It's true the environment is worse off than it was. But far fewer people live in abject poverty or outright hunger. Some horrible diseases like polio have been almost defeated. The global standard of living has risen dramatically since 1970.

I didn't see much "balance" when we had a nuclear-tipped 45 year standoff with Russia. Now communism is no longer an issue, although some idiot socialists probably miss it. We vanquished fascism and it hasn't returned. Even the lunatic Islam fringe is quiet, for now.

Some good things, some bad things. So I guess that is balance.

Sorry if I don't see gloom and doom everywhere. My reading of history -- and I read a lot of history -- doesn't point me in that direction.

Robert it makes mathematical sense that with the vastness of the universe and even our galaxy, that there would be other life out there. I have an online friend who I've known for close to 14 years. We've been on a couple of sites together (way less people than FB or even this forum) where people form real bonds and discuss several topics that we might not discuss elsewhere, considering we know each others real names. He claims to have been abducted more than once. I have another friend who's friend has spoken of abductions and is fairly well known. I have a close friend who told me a story of missing time when she was 10. She was walking across a field to get to her grandmother's house after watching a parade. When she got to her grandmother's house, her family was there and so were the police. She was startled to find that she had been missing for hours although it seemed to her like she had walked directly to her grandma's like she always did. Of course missing time is one of the things abductees claim to have experienced.

Great, whatever you want to believe. Nothing wrong with viewing things in a positive way.

Oddly just last night, the movie "Fire in the Sky" was on ..... one of the stations.

It is the story of Travis Walton and the tree cutting crew that in 1975, encountered a UFO ? while cutting trees in a national forest.

The story centers around Walton, as he was the one that was supposedly abducted ?

True or not ? I do not know, but there was some compelling points made ........ However, it was a movie so ?

I believe in some of the videos I have seen along with the recorded dialogue with some sightings. I do not believe they are manned flights because the distances would be too great. Also, if they were manned why not give a signal that they are here, friendly and leaving. But a mechanized vehicle could also open it doors and drop off something to prove to us there is life elsewhere. If they do not want us to know about them what then are they doing here?

The world, SETI has been listening for a single piece of sound and has had no success. Having seen so many interesting videos and one personal event about 60 years ago I believe something is here but what & why are the million dollar questions.

. . . I do not believe they are manned flights because the distances would be too great. . .

The study estimates that the closest such alien civilization is about 17,000 light years away. If that is anywhere near correct, a signal they sent this way would have been sent 17,000 years ago, and any response we sent back would take another 17,000 years to get there - - a round trip of 34,000 years. It's difficult to imagine having a conversation with such long periods of waiting.

It's also difficult to imagine traveling 17,000 light years. Unless Einstein is found to be incorrect, or we can get around relativity somehow (science fiction has various ideas like warp drive, hyperspace, wormholes), it's a minimum one-way trip of 17,000 years, and probably much longer due to energy constraints, the ship's top speed, and so on.

We've only been able to receive radio communications for the past 100 years or so and other communications even less time than that. We might not even yet recognize what an extraterrestrial signal is because we don't have the technology to detect it. Also it's unlikely we've been producing anything detectable from another planet outside of our solar system for that last 100 years or so.

I think it's highly unlikely that other beings would be travelling through space based on what we know about the dangers of space travel. I do think it's possible but the resources to do so would be tremendous based on what we know.

There may be ways to send out transmitters and receivers out into space that have quantum entanglement with other such units in another civilization's realm that might be able to take care of the communication time lag. However I think we'd need at least that to be able to communicate with another civilization.

Of course there may be things we have yet to discover which allow us to communicate across distances measured light years or travel those distances in less time. I'm not confident that it's possible, but I am open to the possibility.
