Should I feel guilty ?

My `10 item $80 odds and ends Amazon order arrived today. It was delivered at 5 different times by 5 different drivers. My postman brought 1 item. One driver brought 4 items packed in 3 individual small envelope type sleeves, another driver brought a box containing 1 of the items and each of the other drivers brought boxes containing 2 items each.

I live about 12 miles from even the nearest small town. I shudder to think of the environmental impact of those 4 big trucks (postman comes anyway so is not counted) and the disposal of the boxes and packing material.

Don't get me wrong. I love Amazon and know it would be difficult to live where I do without the service but I still feel guilty about the waste. And yes, I know the unemployment situation is helped by providing jobs for the drivers. But I still feel guilty.

Alot has to do with the Shippers and the Amazon Distribution Centers..I get mine pretty quick (when Amazon ships) due to have 2 DC's in Texas.. (y) (y)

When I order from a Shipper, they usually ship USPS and it takes days to deliver!!

When it is shipped Prime it comes a day or 2....

No, you shouldn't feel guilty. You didn't ask them to ship these items as they did. This was their choice so don't feel bad about it. I wouldn't.

Should I feel guilty? Of course, yes, we'll have the tar and feathering in the town square at noon, tomorrow. But, aside of buying billions of dollars of Amazon stock, and making yourself CEO, there really isn't much you can do about it. It does seem awfully wasteful for Amazon. And you'd think they had some kind of app that would inform them when they have multiple packages to the same address.

Think how much driving everyone that gets those packages would actually have to do to find, and pick out what they want and then get it back home. If you live far out, folks would probably have to go a long way and to several stores to get what they can online with a click. That can save seniors and families a lot of gas, time and trouble. That should count for a lot!

Glad I'm not the only one with this problem with Amazon! .. Absolutely crazy system they have for making deliveries ... never know how and where your orders are coming from ... Happens to me all the time.

I feel a little guilty about buying from Amazon at all. Because they remind me of the Blob in that 1950's Sci-Fi movie. They are sucking up everything and eventually I can see them becoming the only game in town.

But so far my guilt has not reached the point where I am going to stop buying from them. So that makes me part of the problem for creating the monster.

On the other hand, Amazon does do one thing that makes more sense environmentally. If I buy a very small item, such as a lipstick, they hold off on shipping it until they can combine it with a larger order. So at least you don't usually have a large truck delivering a tiny item like that.

I have decided to order from Amazon only when I can't find it anywhere else! There have been too many deliveries that have been placed beside my garage door at my basement. I did not know they had delivered them and had it been raining, they would have gotten soaked. I have a secure place they could put it on my front porch but they don't leave them there. Also, I have ordered heavy packages in the past from them that would have been impossible for me to get it upstairs from my basement. Because of this, I refuse to order from them again unless I have no other choice and then it will be with deep regrets!

Definitely. Blame Amazon. They ruin everything they touch. We don't need these mega corporations polluting the earth.

OP as for Amazon employing people, think of all the people who will be unemployed when they successfully destroy all brick and mortar stores, forcing everyone to order everything online. This is their grand plan. I haven't supported Amazon for years and feel sorry for those who have no option but to shop there. Those people care nothing for anything except corporate products.

Gennie, don't feel guilty because...
a. Amazon make$ enough money (trust me)
b. Drones will soon fly over and drop your order
c. They are forward thinkers and want to keep their
small-item customers who may, in the future, strike it rich and order in bulk

Even if you order Waterford crystal?
Yup...and Bloomberg Technology used by a company named "Flirty" has already gotten government approval ahead of Amazon. Cold foods remain cold and hot foods remain hot...arrives in minutes. The drone sets it down slow and steady.

Correction please. I don't feel guilty about the cost to Amazon. CEO didn't become mega rich just because he is a good guy. I feel guilty about what the excessive packaging and delivery does to the atmosphere/environment/Mother Earth.

I agree about the sucking up of other businesses. Walmart moves into town and sucks up the mom and pop and shopping center stores and Amazon finishes them off.

I don't fee guilty because if you lived on a rock in the middle of the Pacific and you needed/wanted something that you couldn't get there (which is a lot of things you can't get there) you'd go to where you could. And besides I support a lot of small businesses that operate through Amazon. As far as supporting local businesses, I very much do that, too. Also I feel more secure ordering through Amazon than ordering through a multitude of various websites throughout the cyber world.

Yes, also change is inevitable and don't feel quite right about penalizing someone because they are smart enough to invent or find a new way...as long as its legal. More than one way to look at things, like you say. Who was it said "the only thing permanent in life is change?".

Amazon's order form has a place for special delivery instructions. Use it. It works.

I'll try that if I have to order from them. But, I will wait until it is something light weight especially after hearing about a problem on my local news some man was having with their delivery service. Instead of driving down his driveway, they were driving across his yard and tearing up his grass and causing it to be muddy. He requested special delivery instructions when he placed the order and they kept doing it. He called Amazon and they told him he needed to request special delivery instructions on his order. He told them he had left special delivery instructions several times but they continued to drive on his grass instead of his driveway. Between his problem and mine, I will wait until I need something that I can manage from my basement before I order from them again.

My dog is going to love drone deliveries of hot food.
LOL
