Six dead in possible terrorist attack in Manhattan

Breaking news, six are dead and others injured as a rental truck drove 20 blocks in the wrong direction on a bike path near the World Trade Center killing cyclists, joggers and pedestrians. The driver crashed into a bus then jumped out and started shooting. Police shot the suspect in the leg and he's now in the hospital. This is a breaking story. News in preliminary. FBI task force on the scene is treating this as a terrorist attack,
 

Truck drives 20 miles on a bike path?! Who ever would have thought that possible. So so sad...beyond sad.
 

The toll is 8 now, with 11 serious but stable. Right after schools let out. He's in Bellevue Hospital.

They're saying these new ways ISIS has vs Al Queda is that there's no formal combat training, no expensive guns, they're into just attacking civilians when each of them feel inspired and the time is right. They want more vehicular weaponry and or home made explosives. Cheap and effective.

This guy is from Uzbekistan like the one in Sweden back in April, had a FL driver's license.

He came out of the truck brandishing a pellet gun and a paintball gun, looking for death by cop. But he wasn't killed. I think it was an abdominal wound.

What's so scary about this modus operandi, is there is no organization of an upcoming attack, no planning among a large group therefore no internet chatter that would give us warning. Isis just leaves it up to the individual, like "If you feel froggy, then leap".
 
So sad to see this happening once again, and unfortunately these terror attacks will continue. May the dead rest in peace, my heart goes out to their families. :(
 
This world gets more frightening by the minute. There isn't any place that's safe anymore. my heart goes out to the victims that were in this atrocious attack and their loved ones.

It's virtually impossible to prevent the lone wolf attack. Only blind luck can do it. When a car or a truck is the weapon, I see no defense. If renting a truck required an extensive background check, terrorists could simply steal trucks. They obviously prefer to act more discreetly, but they've shown themselves to be quite adaptable.

Biological weapons can't be far away. Imagine terrorists who were infected with plague, a pathogen that's easy to get in certain places. Consider the following. Try to think like a terrorist while you watch it.

There is no way to stop this. Be aware of your surroundings and if you see or hear anything try to alert as many as possible.
It happens fast and people don't have time to react.

May not be any way to stop it but we need to adjust our immigration and borders to the real world we face today.

If you got careless and your bathtub is over flowing, you don't try to mop up the mess until AFTER you have turned off the faucet to stop the water flow. Trying to mop up the mess and make any needed repairs while the faucet is still causing water to overflow will get a little frustrating, to say the least. There are things you can do but you need to do things in some rational order/manner.
 
I'm glad they captured this guy alive. Maybe we'll have a chance of learning something about what's behind this insanity going on in the world. Depends on how willing he is to talk.
 
Now that we know people use motor vehicles to attack innocent people in public places maybe something can be done to protect certain areas like jogging and cycle paths? Where I live the city just added a cycle path right on the main road painting it in with white lines which would make it so easy for any motorist on the road to do something like the Manhattan attack. This is ill advised and something should be done about it. Just IMHO.

I really dont think that would be a deterrent. They'll just find an easier place to target. Killing 8 people with a truck isn't that difficult to do in my opinion.

Have you ever been near a school when it lets out? Or just find a crowd in a small town that doesn't have the barricades, etc.

If you are someone who is willing to die when you commit these type of acts ...it's not that hard. I think we're very lucky that we haven't had more.

Grain of salt. I believe very little the Daily Mail prints. They're known for sensationalism. If I saw a video of him being gleeful, I might believe it. Otherwise…

True but Its one of my favorite news sites. I know their reputation but after reading them for awhile I see that most of their stories are pretty accurate.

I was leery at first and would never use them as a news link but my views of them have changed.

I agree in a way with some of what you say. We can't prevent these attacks, but maybe we can protect certain vulnerable areas. Perhaps if we work on anti terrorist architecture and engineering something may improve.
 
For bike and walking paths along the road, maybe a guard rail or bike barriers would make it harder for a vehicle to jump a curb?

I just rode my bike today along a bike trail between a river and roadway a few feet away. It was very nice, and the thought of some idiot using a truck to hit me was the farthrest from my mind. But according to the reports, he had planned this for a year or more and had even practiced, choosing the time of day when the most people were there. He also said he would have continued to kill if he hadn't hit the school bus, which stopped him.

But if it did happen to me, my prayer would be that, because of my age and the fact that they tell me I don't look it, some fanatic would mistake me for a younger guy and then the nut who kills me in the name of ISIS would be humiliated and embarrassed by the outcries around the world to the point where their idealism would bring shame and severe criticism to all adherents of an extreme group who spout and disseminate pure hatred.

You have nailed it. The U.S. and Canada are importing their problems that are religion based.

Nine out out of ten of these attacks are religious fanatics who have no desire to integrate into the fabric of peace. They bring their problems with them.

Our problems are ahead of us. Already they want to take a citizenship with their face covered. And we let them.
