Slaughter at wedding in Kabul

In a way, the most amazing thing about the article in today's paper about this is the placement of the article. At least 63 people killed in a suicide bombing at a wedding two days ago? The article is on page 10!

From reading it, I am completely bewildered about the "why" behind it. Though I guess that's true for all terrorist activities. There is no theory or explanation of what led up to it, what the terrorist was trying to accomplish (aside from killing and wounding as many people as possible), or any other logic to it. There is some discussion of the Sunni "Islamic State" terrorist group being behind it, though the Taliban denies being involved ... who knows? I know there is a long-standing history of hatred in that part of the world between various Muslim sects. So is this just another example of religion rearing its ugly head once again?

Here's the article:

The victims were all Shiite. The Taliban consider them to be infidels. The Taliban are also about to be given a seat at peace negotiations.

So, the motive could be religious difference or it could be a means of excluding the Taliban from the negotiations.

Either way, it is a cruel and ruthless way to make a point.

But the U.S, has had troops in Afghanistan for 18 years! You would think we'd have it all fixed by now. (sarcasm intended)

Yup, Trade 18 years. The Russians had the sense to get out of Afghanistan. And the sense not to arm the locals, nor to import fanatics from around the world. to fight for us. At least, no one is saying, "there's a light at the end of the tunnel". Our great -great -grand kids will be serving time in Afghanistan.

On second thought, we have been screwing around in Afghanistan for well over 40 years. We started with the Russian invasion in 1979. We were pouring in money, arms, and enticing fanatics like Bin Laden to take up shop way back then. Oh, you forgot the US gave aid to the mujahideen. We did anything we could to oppose the Soviets. And it came back to bite us.

Among Sunny's comments; " - - - There is no theory or explanation of what led up to it, what the terrorist was trying to accomplish (aside from killing and wounding as many people as possible), or any other logic to it. - - - ".

Sounds about like the incidences we've been having here at home. Sort of new to us but the White Supremacist" movement seems headed in the same direction, especially since they now receive encouragement from from legitimate sources. Sad to see our once great country sliding into Third World status.

Very true Dave. Hatred is hatred, whether it's between Muslim sects, white supremacists, or whoever.
