Sleep and Aging...This Sucks

For me, two things contribute to my inability to sleep. Low blood sugar and menopause. The chemical imbalances that causes have been a problems since pari-menopause. I haven't had a good night's sleep since then. I don't do drugs for it. They can destroy us in so many ways. Ambien made things worse. So some nights I have only two hours of disrupted sleep. At it's best I get six and a half, waking up every two hours. A lot of my relatives have the same problem.

I'm really confused when I go to bed. I usually end up sweating profusely when I fall asleep. I've woken to find the sheets and pillow wet. All too often I have the window open even when it's 50F outside, and usually turn on the ceiling fan as well.

I rarely sleep any more than four hours at a time. I've just accepted that it is what my body needs or wants.

I may be up at the awful early hours of the morning, doing the mostly silent type of housework, but then I'll be asleep during the afternoon.

I've got some tablets here that my doctor prescribed, but I took one, just once.

Sure, I slept, but had the most dreadful hangover for the rest of the day, when I finally woke up. Wouldn't ever take another one.

If you were a woman I'd say it's remnants of hormones that make you sweat at night. That happens with me. For me other things that make me sweat at night are excess salt and the additives to packaged foods.

My body needs a lot more sleep than I'm getting. But being upset about it does me no good at all. So I do the best I can.

Does anyone else have this problem? Me and hubby both fight with people in our sleep. Some nights it's him and some nights it's me...it's good we take turns at least;) He'll be gently shaking my shoulder because I was fighting with somebody out loud in my dream. Or I'll wake up to him cursing like a sailor to whomever and I'll scratch his back until it goes away...the dreams can be apocalyptic...fires, explosions...I don't want to be a grown up anymore Mr. Wizard...

I have told people off in my sleep in the last few years. I never did that before. I figure it's because I'd always wanted to say these things to them, it was unwise to do so, so I didn't. My husband sometimes kicks me in his sleep. He says in his dreams he's defending me against someone. He's been doing this for years.

My ex-wife was "Assaulted" by her brothers as a kid. She developed a fighting response that involved striking out with her elbows. One night she must have dreamt she was being attacked. Fortunately, I woke before I was hurt, and gently woke her up. I always slept with my back toward her after that.

Falling asleep while using the bathroom IS bad, but I've found that falling asleep during sex can be quite painful as well ...

Falling asleep during sex can(and shall be!) extremely hazardous to your health. .... asking for the TV remote or reaching for the Sunday paper sports section is dangerous too.

Sometimes the person doesn't want to have sex anyway, but is doing it because the other person wants to. That's the way it was with me and my first husband. Then when he started watching tv in the middle of it, I moved the television out of the bedroom. I was glad when he found a girlfriend - several actually. One of them told me she would take him from me. She was dying of cancer, so I wasn't upset with her. But I did dump him.

Falling asleep during sex won't get you hurt half as bad as moaning a past lovers name while in the throes of passion......or so I've heard.

That might be a key ingredient, at least for some people. I've been getting lots of exercise lately, and can fall asleep most any time I go to bed. Problem is I don't want to go to bed. It seems like sleeping is such a waste of time. There are too many more interesting things to do, like surf the net. :)
As my dad always said, "you can sleep when you're dead." Pragmatic, he was.

Tell you what, let's switch for a while. You can have my inability to sleep. In return I'll take your ability to sleep. I get lots of exercise too. We have different body chemistries, that why some can sleep and some can't.

But it's 5:22 AM, rahhhhhh I'm not retired and my kid has to be up to catch the school bus...Fortunate the summer is almost here, but this is nuts.

Yes, it is. The body sucks. Are you post menopausal? The hormones can cause this. It still does me, and I've been past menopause for eighteen years. Somehow a person goes on.

I have had trouble sleeping since the last trimester of pregnancy when I was pregnant with my son, almost thirty five years ago. My son is beginning to discover insomnia also. Aargh! Lol.
